Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (May 30, 2018) – Trey Starks started and finished strong during both nights of the Bob Weikert Memorial last weekend at Port Royal Speedway.

The Gobrecht Motorsports driver qualified in the top 10 each night and rallied to score a top-10 result both nights after heat race outings buried the team.

“The main event lineup was based on qualifying and heat race points both nights,” Starks said. “We did a good job of qualifying well each night, but we started on the inside of the third row in a heat race both times and that wasn’t a good place to start.”

Starks qualified seventh quickest before a seventh-place finish in a heat race on Friday started him 19th in the A Main.

“We made progress throughout the race and were able to get into the top 10, which is a nice accomplishment when you start so far back,” he said. “Track position is so important. We didn’t have it, but were able to salvage a good result.”

Starks earned a 10th-place result and was named the Hard Charger Award winner for passing the most cars. That locked him into Sunday’s main event if he was unable to advance into the show.

Starks had a similar performance during the event finale as he timed in sixth quickest during qualifying before a seventh-place run in a heat race ranked him 16th in points. That started him on the outside of the eighth row for the main event.

“Everything played out pretty similar to Saturday,” he said. “We had a good race car and were able to pass a lot of cars in the feature, but we just started too far back. I was pleased we were able to come away with a pair of top 10s considering where we started both Weikert Memorial A Mains.”

Starks finished eighth, which marked his eighth top 10 of the season.

The weekend began on Friday at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., where Starks qualified sixth quickest to open the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series event. He rocketed to the lead during his heat race, but a rear end failure resulted in a DNF. That relegated the team to the Last Chance Showdown.

Starks placed fourth in the consolation race to transfer into the back of the main event. He closed the night by rallying from 22nd to 17th, which was the second-most cars passed in the feature.

“We were set up pretty well through the first part of the night until the mechanical problem,” he said. “We did our best to overcome that and make up as much ground as we could in the main event after starting near the back.”
