Jamie Ball- Podium Finish #2
(White Lightning Motorsports) – July 24, 2010 –
This week would see the Delta Oil #5J race on Saturday July 24, 2010 at the Knoxville Raceway. Our teams 360 engine was still not finished at Ostrich Racing Engines. We used Terry Alexander’s 360 engine to get some show up points. We would also race our 305 sprint car.
This past weekend at the Knoxville Raceway my team was scheduled to race both the 305 and 360 sprints cars. Well, after blowing that engine three weeks ago we still hadn’t gotten it fixed. So we would just do hot laps in the 360 class and then race the 305 class. I would go out in the first flight of hot laps for the 305 class and in that session I was the 2nd fastest car. Next up would be the 305 heat race. I was lined up first row outside (2nd) to start the race. The green flag would drop and I would take the lead from the start and never look back, winning the race by a full straight away over #7Taz Tasker Phillips. The last and final event of the night would be the 305 A-Main where I would be lined up third row inside (5th). The track was very different compared to normal. Turns one and two were fairly tacky and turns three and four were very slick. I had Travis Cram and Tasker Phillips starting in front of me so I knew that if I wanted to win I was going to have to run the bottom, and run it well. The race started and I came off turn two in fourth place. I would ride in fourth for a few laps before passing Phillips for third place. When we caught lap traffic I was able to make my way into second place. Then with two laps to go there would be a yellow flag. This would give me a chance to have a shot at victory. There would be a green, white, checkered restart. I was able to get a great start and was right on the back of the Cram. My plan was to try and either run the bottom and pass him coming off turn two or to slide him if I had the chance. Well with Cram being the experienced veteran that he is, he covered the bottom pretty good and it messed me up just enough for him to get out front comfortably. I was running second and then on the last corner of the last lap I would lose second place by one car length too #7w Windmar. Overall a third place finish felt great. It was my second podium of the year and I was very happy with how the race went. It was the most fun I have ever had in a race car. I am really looking forward to trying to get my first win on August 8th when the 305 class returns to the Knoxville Raceway.
This week the White Lightning Motorsports Team plans to race on Saturday July 31, 2010 at the Knoxville Raceway. This Saturday is Candi’s Flowers night at the Knoxville Raceway. We will be getting our 360 engine back this week and we will be gearing up for 360 nationals next week. Come out and support myself and the rest of the White Lightning Motorsports race team at Knoxville Raceway this Saturday.
