Jesse Baker Wins Salute To Indy With ASCS Southwest Region

Bryan Hulbert – LAS CRUCES, N.M. (May 27, 2018) Getting the jump on Rick Ziehl through the first and second turns of the Southern New Mexico Speedway, Jesse Baker kept his Jackson Compaction No. 22 at the front of the field for 25 laps to pick up Sunday’s $2,500 to win Salute to Indy with the ASCS Southwest Region.

Green from the outside of the front row, Baker railed the cushion on the Lucas Oil No. 20z with the pair locked in battle for the first few laps. Keeping ahead of Ziehl, the line began to migrate with the center starting to come into play. Searching the track while keeping his momentum up, Baker found the line as the leaders hit traffic.

Avoiding a lapped car spinning as they leaders tried to work by, the caution thwarted a run at the lead by Ziehl.

Working back into traffic in a handful of laps, Baker was able to work under slower cars to extend his advantage with a 1.423-second advantage at the checkered flag. Battling back and forth with John Carney II for the runner-up spot, slower traffic played to the advantage of the No. 20z to award Rick Ziehl the silver position. Carney in third was followed by Lorne Wofford with Johnny Herrera coming to finish fifth.

X-Mods found a first-time winner with Mike Rosales running from 7th to win over John Caney, would hold on for second. Justin Allen from 10th was followed by 16th starting Nick Rivera with Josh Cain from 11th to complete the top-five.

Using a caution with two laps to run, Jimmy Ray edged out Donovan Flores by 0.030 seconds for the win. Josh Reynolds, Pete Vargas, and Loyd Turner made up the top-five,

The Legends of the Southwest A-Feature went to El Paso’s Michael Gonzales. Keeping Cameron Sogge at bay, the pair were chased by 10th starting Gunner Harris with Eli Woody completing the top-five.

While the low line had come in prior to the Late Models, the top was the fastest way around for Christy Barnett who led start to finish. Patience was a virtue for Jake Gallardo who slowly picked his way to second. Jonathan Ortega, Fito Gallardo, and Xavier Ortega made the top-five.

Mini Sprints, while only numbering four, produced the closest finish of the night with Nickolas Andrade getting the victory by 0.010 over Drew Cassidy. Suffering a hard crash, the night before, the young lady returned without losing a step. Brian Baca and Nick Kelly completed the field.

The Southern New Mexico Speedway is located 11 miles west of Las Cruces at 10263 Robert Larson Blvd. More information on the track can be found at http;//www.snmspeedway.com or by calling (575) 524-7913.
