Carney Leads The Charge In Southern New Mexico Speedway’s Salute To Indy Opener

Bryan Hulbert – LAS CRUCES, N.M. (May 26, 2018) Opening the Salute to Indy on Saturday night, the lineup of winners was led by El Paso’s John Carney II with a $2,500 score with the ASCS Southwest Region.

Racing back and forth with Rick Ziehl to open the 25-lap affair, Carney secure the top spot before the fifth lap and never relinquished the position through some slower traffic and several cautions. Rick Ziehl’s best finish of the season, the No. 20z was joined on the podium by Royal Jones who held off multiple charges by Lorne Wofford who finished fourth. Wes Wofford completed the top-five.

While the driver of the No. J2 may have picked up Saturday’s biggest check, the El Paso native was not the only Carney putting on a show as his father, John Carney, Sr. picked up the win with the USRA X-Mods with a three-wide pass for the lead in the final laps of the 25-lap A-Feature. Patiently around the inside line through the closing laps, Carey was tailed by Jaime Torres who was by far the Hard Charger of the night with a run from 23rd to second. Greg Gorham from 11th contended for the lead for most of the race before settling for third. Josh Cain from 16th was fourth with early race leader, Sherman Barnett, making up the top-five.

With 18 USRA Street Stocks on hand, the A-Feature, while littered with cautions, was anyone's for the taking. With numerous lead changes, the advantage finally fell the way to 13th starting, Donovan Flores who edged out fellow seventh-row starter Jimmy Ray for the win. Leading for several laps, Lloyd Turner would end up third with Josh Reynolds and Pete Vargas from 17th to complete the top-five.

Another race that came down to the final laps saw 12th starting Daniel Blaser picking up the win with the Legends of the Southwest. Keeping his No. 1i around the low line of the Southern New Mexico Speedway, the young shoe didn’t let anyone run his race as he held off the late charge of Gunner Harris. Steven Arellano in third was followed by Eli Woody from 15th. Dave Smith rebounded to fifth after getting caught up in an early caution.

Cruising to victory with the Late Models, Xavier Ortega held a commanding lead at the drop of the checkered flag. Duane Murphy held on for second with Jonathan Ortega, Christy Barnett, and Fito Gallardo making up the top-five.

Mini Sprints numbered four with Nickolas Andrade, Christian White, and Brian Baca finding the checkered flag. With the lead early, Drew Cassidy took a vicious ride off the second turn after sliding into an infield tractor tire. Drew was okay.

The Salute to Indy at the Southern New Mexico Speedway wraps up on Sunday, May 27 with the ASCS Southwest Region, Late Models, X-Mods, Legends, USRA Stock Cars, and Mini Sprints in action. Gates open 5:00 P.M. with racing getting underway at 7:45 P.M.
