26 Promotions – Queen Creek, AZ – (May 23, 2018) – RJ Johnson found himself in a familiar place on Saturday night as the five-time USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series champion scored his 54th career series win.
Running the Reinbold/Underwood Motorsports, Westmar powered, number 19 Spike Chassis for the first time this season, Johnson picked up the heat race win from the pole, earning enough points to lock into the six-car feature invert.
“We started fourth and jumped up to second on lap one,” explained Johnson. “We had a yellow on lap three, and that put me on Dennis Gile’s rear bumper. On the restart, I decided to try the bottom to get by Gile and finally did so on lap five.”
Johnson set sail from there, collecting his third USAC Southwest Sprint Car Series feature win of the season.
“I just stuck to a game plan of staying on the bottom until I heard someone coming on the top, but luckily I never did,” he said. “I really can’t thank Andy Reinbold and Todd Underwood enough for giving me the opportunity to run the 19 car. We wanted to use this race as a tune-up before we head back east, and I’d say everything went really well.“
Johnson heads to Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday with the AMSOIL USAC/CRA Series and then returns to Arizona on Sunday to run with the USAC Southwest Series at Canyon Speedway Park.
RJ Johnson would like to thank AME Electrical, Ross Equipment Rentals, Beaver Stripes, Auto Image by Brandon Dozel, Spike Chassis, and Wesmar Race Engines for their support.
