Inside Line Promotions – ATTICA, Ohio (May 21, 2018) – Shane Call had a successful 305ci winged sprint car debut for CH Motorsports last Friday night at Attica Raceway Park.
“I think it went well for my first night,” said Call, who finished all of the laps during his heat race and B Main while avoiding major incidents. “We put it back in the trailer in one piece at the end of the night. I definitely learned a lot of stuff.”
Call quickly learned the value of clean air for a winged sprint car in his heat race, which he started eighth and finished seventh.
“I didn’t realize what losing wing speed was until I found that out in the first turn at the start of the heat race,” he said. “I got halfway through the turn and then slid up over the turn because my car lost the air on the wing due to another one being right in front of me. It was a good thing there wasn’t a wall there. I definitely learned a lot just in that one race.”
Call started fourth and finished eighth in the night’s B Main.
“There were a few cautions at the start and I was holding my line for the most part,” he said. “Once we got going, we were all down on the bottom. I was having a little trouble with my brakes. I had to pump them on the straightaway so that they would work in the turns.
“I was only about a foot behind a guy in front of me when he got a little sideways and checked up. I couldn’t stop in time and bumped into the back of him. Then I spun around and slid up to the top of the track, bringing out the yellow. I restarted in the back and just kind of held my spot there and didn’t make any big moves. I figured I’d stay back there and figure out different parts of the track for the next time we’re there. I learned some more doing that the rest of the race.”
Call, who will take this weekend off from racing to participate in his graduation activities at Evergreen High School, plans to return to Attica Raceway Park on June 1.
“Probably the toughest part of the night was learning how to drive on a tacky track,” he said. “I had only driven on a dry slick track at Oakshade (in practice the week before) and my dad said that Attica would be tacky and fast. I had some trouble running the top because I’d barely turn the wheel and it would send me right to the bottom. And it was really tight coming out of the turns. But it was a good night overall. I learned a lot and I’m looking forward to our next race.”
