PETERSEN MEDIA: Paul Nienhiser is starting to feel like he has a bull’s-eye on his car. The start of the season has been hard on the Chapin, IL driver but he has been fast each night out and is hoping to turn his luck around this weekend in Knoxville, IA.
“It’s unfortunate our season has started like this, but my crew has really done a great job of putting a fast car on the track each and every night,’ Nienhiser said.
Taking on the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour on Wednesday and Thursday night in Kansas, Nienhiser kicked the action off at Humboldt Speedway where he would line the CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Oil/Mason Sound/Innovative Design entry up in the fourth row of his heat race.
On a very slick surface that was deceiving to the eye, Nienhiser would struggle to make grip in his heat though he was able to pick up two valuable positions as finish fifth. The passing point format would be kind to him on this night as he would sit 11th in points after heats and solidly in the feature event.
When the feature event went green, Nienhiser was able to quickly pick up a couple of positions and race his way inside the Top-10. Down the front stretch, Nienhiser would feel a fellow competitor run him up to the wall and his would force him to check up and lose momentum and lose several spots.
Back in 12th, Nienhiser would push the issue trying to race back up inside the Top-10, but as he continued to fight hard he would use his tires up and would end up finishing 12th on this night.
Traveling to Lakeside Speedway on Thursday night, Nienhiser would draw the front row of his heat race where he would slip back to fourth in the opening laps but was able to patiently work his way back up to finish second and again have enough points to transfer into the feature event.
Sitting ninth in the standings, Nienhiser would just miss out on the redraw and on this night he would take the green flag from the ninth starting position. In what was his first appearance at the track since he competed with the World of Outlaws back in 2014, Nienhiser and company would throw some radical changes at their car before taking the green flag.
Getting off to a great start, Nienhiser flexed his muscles early as he quickly raced his way up into the fifth position and closed in on third and fourth as the leaders battled through traffic.
A caution flag would erase all gaps that Nienhiser had and he would look to capitalize when the action resumed. With a slower car in the mix on the restart, Nienhiser would feel the wrath as an unexpected lane change would cause damage to his front end but somehow he was able to keep his machine fired and would again restart in fifth with a battered front end.
When the race came back to life, Nienhiser continued to run well despite having a bent up front end and soon took over fourth. Going into turns one and two a few laps later, Nienhiser’s front end would finally give way, and it was cause him to get into an infield tire and bring his night to and end.
“Thursday night was really good for my confidence because we showed some awesome speed against a great group of cars,” Nienhiser added. “We are planning on getting to Knoxville this weekend to run double-duty. Our 410 has been at Rider, so we are looking forward to getting that back and breaking it in.”
Nienhiser would like to thank CAM2 Blue Blood Racing Oil, Mason Sound, Innovative Design, Bradshaw Custom Pumping, Wessler Bros. Agency, Bob Hawks Auto Body, Littleton Storm & Timber, Fierce Herbicide, Sunstoppers Window Tinting, Engler Machine and Tool, FK Indy, Rider Racing Engines, Kaeding Performance, and Steve Thomas Racing for their continued support.
