Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (May 15, 2018) – Derek Hagar was on pace to capture his first win of the season last Saturday at I-30 Speedway before a part failure hampered him during the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com event.

Hagar won his heat race from the pole position to start the night.

“We started out pretty fast,” he said. “We were quick in hot laps and the heat race. We were confident about the car. I didn’t get many passing points in the heat since I started on the pole, but it was enough to make the feature redraw and I was lucky enough to draw the No. 2.”

That was the extent of luck for Hagar, who started the 30-lap A Main on the outside of the front row.

“We took the lead on the start,” he said. “After the red on the second lap I could tell something was wrong with the front end of the car. If I turned right I didn’t feel a lot. It didn’t feel like I had the steering wheel on. It kept getting worse and worse. Around Lap 15 it really started affecting the handle of the car. Come to find after the races the left front torsion stop broke in two. It made the car very ill handling. I had to enter the corners off the gas and straighter. It killed the momentum and the drive.”

Hagar led the first 15 laps of the race before fading to a fourth-place finish, which was his 18th top five at the track since 2011.

“We had the winning car,” he said. “I just had some stupid luck. We were able to salvage a fourth-place finish, but it was disappointing. It’s one of those things we’ve never broke. I guess we’ll have to start checking those closer.”

Hagar will do double duty this Saturday at Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., where he will drive his 360ci winged sprint car and will pilot a 305ci winged sprint car for Ricky Mendoza.
