(PEDAL DOWN PROMOTIONS) May 8, 2018 – One week after turning in a solid run with the Interstate Racing Association 410 Sprint Car Series at the Beaver Dam Raceway, Paul Pokorski and his Pokorski Motorsports team fired up the 2018 Plymouth Dirt Track Racing/Midwest Sprint Car Association 360 Sprint Car season Saturday, May 5, at the Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth, Wis.
Pokorski was among a strong field of 30 PDTR/MSA Sprint Car competitors who signed in to do battle for the first time in 2018 at the third-mile Plymouth Dirt Track facility.
After lining up sixth in the second 10-lap Sprint Car heat race, Pokorski put on an impressive driving display working his way past Anthony Knierim, Spyder Akright, Bill Taylor and Chris Clayton en route to a strong second-place finish to earn a transfer spot to the evening’s A-main event.
“The car was great in the heat race,” Pokorski said. “I was really happy with how it handled and was looking forward to having a strong run in the A main.”
Pokorski, who opened the season with a 15th-place finish in the season-opening IRA event at the Beaver Dam Raceway on April 29, began the 22-car Sprint Car A-main from the seventh starting spot.
Sticking to the preferred low line, Pokorski advanced two positions in the early going before settling into the fifth spot on lap 3. On lap 8, Jim Melis slipped past to gain the fifth position. However, Pokorski would regain the position when Melis stopped in turn three on lap 15 to bring out the first caution of the event.
After restarting in fifth place on lap 15, Pokorski struggled over the final 10 laps as he searched for the fast line around the dry, slick track surface. At the finish line, Pokorski was scored in 10th place as polesitter Danny Schlafer notched the flag-to-flag victory.
“We were okay at the beginning of the A main, but I think the moved the wing back too much and tightened it up too far, which kind of killed the car on the bottom,” Pokorski said. “I compounded the problem by getting frustrated and moving to the top to try and make something happen, which didn’t work.
“After 25 full years in this sport, it’s amazing that we still seem to keep learning new things,” he said. “I’d say we’re in a good spot right now and I’m confident we’ll get better each and every week going forward.”
The Pokorski Motorsports team will be in action again this Saturday, May 12 at The Plymouth Dirt Track at the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds in Plymouth.
The grandstand will open at 4:30 p.m. with hot laps at 5:30 p.m. and racing set to begin at 6 p.m.
