26 Promotions – Las Cruces, NM – (April 12, 2018) – After a rocky start to the 2018 season two weeks ago in Oklahoma, Spencer Hill kicked off the New Mexico Micro Sprint season with a bang over the weekend at Southern New Mexico Speedway.
“Friday was a huge night for us. After a rough showing in Oklahoma, I knew that it was imperative to go to Las Cruces with a fresh mind and just do what we needed to do,” Hill explained. “Luckily, we had a flawless night from the moment we pulled into the gate, and Jim had a rocket of a set up on the 4s machine.”
Night one of the 305 Sprint Shootout kicked off with heat race action. Hill started sixth and quickly moved into second coming out of turn four on the first lap. From there Hill set his eyes on race leader, Mason Keefer, making the pass for the lead on the inside of turn one on lap four to go on to win the heat race.
The heat win lined Hill up on the pole for the start of Friday night’s feature event.
“The track was actually really tricky on Friday night,” said Hill. “I have never seen it lose so much grip before the feature and I know that was the most I’ve ever had to pedal a Micro around that joint.”
Hill jumped out to the lead on the start and never looked back, leading every lap to pick up his first win of the 2018 season.
The Thrill entered Saturday night looking to sweep the weekend, but the competition wasn’t going to make it easy for him.
“We started fourth in our heat and had to check up big time for a car that got out of shape just as we were trying to pass them,” he explained. “We lost a bunch of momentum and Keefer was way out in front.”
Hill began to reel in the 7 of Keefer as the laps wound down and a caution with two to go gave Hill the opportunity he needed to compete for the heat race win. Hill got off to a great jump on the restart and took the lead to pick up the victory.
Starting on the pole, Hill knew he’d need to fend off Keefer to end the weekend in victory lane.
“Mason was right on my back bumper as he got through lap traffic a tick better than we did,” he said. “With five to go, Mason threw a big slider attempt when I opened the door, we made contact in turn one, but I remained in the lead.”
For the second night in a row, Hill would lead flag to flag and complete the weekend sweep in Las Cruces.
“It feels so good to finally get our bad luck behind us that we carried over for the past year or so. To pick up one win was big, but to pull off the weekend sweep is really special for a lot of reasons. This was probably my last trip to Southern New Mexico Speedway unless I find a Sprint Car ride, so to go out on top is a huge accomplishment for myself and our team as a whole. Also, I was super pumped to get out sponsor, DiAnn Hassell, and Hassell Racing into victory lane on her birthday,” said Hill. “The car was on rails all weekend thanks to Jim, and I am really looking forward to seeing what we have for Kansas in a few weeks. Huge thank you to everybody involved.”
Hill returns to action in the 4s Micro Sprint on May 26th and 27th in Garden City, Kansas at Airport Raceway.
Spencer Hill would like to thank VP Racing Fuels, SEH Motorsports, Hassell Racing, Bell Racing Helmets, Matt’s Mobile Detailing, and Wheels Up Wednesday for their continued support.
