Swindell Charges Forward at Devil’s Bowl and I-30 During Season-Opening Weekend

Inside Line Promotions – LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (March 19, 2018) – Sammy Swindell produced a pair of strong results last weekend while kicking off his sprint car season.

Swindell and the A.G. Rains owned team began the action on Friday at Devil’s Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, for the 45th annual Spring Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by SawBlade.com.

“It all went really well,” Swindell said. “We unloaded at Devil’s Bowl and the car was pretty good. However, we drew a bad spot for the heat race. We started fourth, but we had Wayne Johnson and Matt Covington on the front row and Tony Bruce Jr. on the inside. At that point of the night the track was wide open through the middle. There wasn’t a lot you could do.”

Swindell gained a position to finish third, which lined him up on the outside of the seventh row for the A Main.

“By that time the track had went away except the top,” he said. “It was pretty much wide open up there. I was able to get a run a few times and slide some guys. With 25 laps and not many yellows it makes it tough to pass a lot, but it was all good. That was a new car and the first time we’d run it and everything was pretty positive.”

Swindell rallied from 14th to a sixth-place result, which was the second-most cars passed.

Saturday’s event at Devil’s Bowl Speedway rained out so the team hustled to catch the sprint car show at I-30 Speedway.

“We were going to drive by there to go home so we thought we’d hurry to try to make it and it worked out,” he said. “We didn’t get there until just after 8 p.m. They put us at the back of a heat, but didn’t tell us we wouldn’t get any passing points. We rolled out there with no laps on the car pretty much the same way we ran it the night before.”

Swindell charged from eighth to third place, but had to line up 11th for the A Main because of the lack of passing points.

“The track was pretty slow and dry and dusty,” he said. “It was slow going getting around people. We just kept moving up. We didn’t get yellows until right there at the end. I had got to second with a few laps to go and could just about run around (Tim) Crawley. He had moved over to where I was running so that took the line I was using and I had to go somewhere else, but the line I was running was the best one. We had a good run on him a couple of times, but couldn’t get him for the lead.”

Swindell settled for a runner-up result.

He will use this Saturday’s USCS Series event at North Alabama Speedway in Tuscumbia, Ala., as a test session.
