[b PLACERVILLE, CA (7-4-10)] – It's traditionally one of the hottest nights of action at the El Dorado County Fairgrounds both on the track and off. It's the annual July Fourth Spectacular at Placerville Speedway as racing moves to Sunday night in celebration of Independence Day.
Winged Sprint Cars, Limited Late Models and Pure Stocks will take to the track for the Red Hawk Casino Championship point series presented by Hoosier Racing Tires, Coors Light, Pepsi Cola and Riebes Auto Parts. The evening will conclude with a giant fireworks display designed by Pyro Spectaculars and presented by the combination of Handy Racing Promotions and the El Dorado County Fairgrounds.
Annually, the Fourth of July marks the halfway point of the championship point racing season at Placerville Speedway. It's an event in which drivers and their teams truly enjoy as they compete before one of the largest crowds of the season and celebrate the holiday with their families and friends in the pit area with various bbq's and fanfare.
The gates will open one hour earlier at Placerville on Sunday July Fourth at 4 p.m. followed by qualifying at 5:30. Adult tickets will be $13, Juniors will be $10 and children 11 and under will be admitted for free on this special night where families are encouraged to celebrate the holiday in the form of auto racing at their local speedway.
Entering the July Fourth Spectacular, Andy Forsberg of Auburn continues to lead the point standings. Forsberg recently saw his once healthy point lead shrink to just 14-digits over local favorite Scott Russell of Placerville. Former track champion Mike Henry of Sacramento is currently third in the standings, 19-points out of the lead. Recent feature event winner Shane Golobic of Fremont is fourth overall while Justin Johnson of Shingle Springs rounds out the top five. Placerville's C.J. Humphreys and Jimmy Trulli sit just out of the top five.
In the Dirt Solutions Limited Late Model division, former track champion Dan Brown Jr. of Grass Valley continues to lead the point standings in his quest for another track championship. Brown, who suffered damaging motor woes last weekend, now holds a 14-point advantage over Jay Norton of Shingle Springs. Doug Grandboise of Jackson is third in the standings, just 30-points out of the lead. Two time winner Matt Davis of Auburn is fourth while Les Friend of Galt rounds out the top five.
In the Pure Stock division, Chris Curtiss of Placerville continues to lead the point standings. Curtiss, a one time winner this year, currently holds a 15-point advantage over Eldorado resident Dennis Armstrong. Eddie Gardner of Sacramento is third in the ranks, 29-points out of the lead and tied with former track champion Rick Grunert of Woodland, Danielle Clauson of Placerville.
Sunday's Pure Stock division will feature the return of defending track champion Tom Tilford of Citrus Heights. Tilford is the defending July Fourth winner at Placerville Speedway and will make his first start of the year here Saturday night after taking time off following the birth of his second child recently and a busy work schedule.
An early arrival to Placerville Speedway is suggested on Sunday, July Fourth as seating will become limited very quickly. The grandstands will open at 4 p.m. and all seating is general admission. The El Dorado County Fairgrounds will also be presenting their annual Family Blast. For a separate admission, families may enjoy various kids activities, live music by Bad Iron and much more.
The National Anthem on Sunday will be performed live by local artist Shauna Lea of Shingle Springs, the lead singer of the local band Hired Guns. Shauna Lea has performed the anthem in spectacular fashion on several occasions at Placerville in the past. Her holiday performance is being be presented by Dale Miller Plumbing and Septic Sunday evening.
