Inside Line Promotions – DU QUOIN, Ill. (March 12, 2018) – Zane Hendricks had a fast race car last Saturday during a challenging night at the Shamrock Classic held inside the Southern Illinois Center.
While the Tucker-Boat Motorsports driver passed a number of cars in each of his three races during the USAC P1 Insurance National Midgets season opener, Hendricks was involved in several incidents that forced him to restart at the back of each race.
His evening began in the second heat race, in which he drew the outside pole starting position.
“I spun the tires a bit on the start,” he said. “Since it was an early heat race the line was on the bottom and I got hung out to the high side. Later on the opening lap three or four of us got together and brought out a yellow so I had to restart at the back. I got back to fifth following the restart when a car spun out in front of me and ended up on top of me, forcing me to restart at the back again. I was able to come back to finish fourth.”
His fourth-place heat race finish was just shy of making the inversion for his qualifier so Hendricks took the green for that race from the seventh starting position.
“I was able to move up to challenge for second when the guy I was racing with came down off the top and we got together, spinning me around and forcing me to restart at the back,” he said. “I passed some cars and came back to finish seventh, but if I had finished second that would have put me in the A Main or on the front row of a B Main.”
Hendricks lined up eighth in the second B Main.
“I was racing with Justin Grant for fifth when I got into the corner too hard and looped it, putting me in the back on the restart,” he said.
His first visit to the Southern Illinois Center was a learning experience.
“I’ve run on tracks that small before in a micro, but not in a midget,” he said. “Once it widened out you could run two or sometimes three wide in the turns. But the straightaways were narrow, since the cars running on the bottom in the turns have to come up to the wall on the straightaways, making it difficult to pass. Our night kind of ended like it started. But we had some good runs in between.”
Hendricks will move on to the next USAC National Midgets race, which is April 13-14 at Kokomo Speedway in Kokomo, Ind.
