Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Feb. 5, 2018) – January was a special month for Giovanni Scelzi.
He was named the 2017 North American 410 Sprint Car Poll Rookie of the Year by a voting panel of media members, promoters, sanctioning officials and manufacturers before he captured the Chili Bowl Midget Nationals Rookie of the Year Award.
Two weeks later Scelzi announced that he is joining forces with veteran car owner and crew chief Paul Silva and Richard and Jennifer Marshall of Priority Aviation Services for a 20-race schedule. The emphasis of that partnership will be on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series swings along the West Coast in the spring and the fall.
The team’s first event is slated for Feb. 28 and March 1 at The Dirt Track at Las Vegas in Las Vegas during the FVP Outlaw Showdown.
“I’m really excited for the opportunity that Paul, Richard and Jennifer have put together,” Scelzi said. “Last year I wasn’t old enough to race with the World of Outlaws and seat time is everything in racing so we’re going to Texas the week before Las Vegas to soak in as much as we can.”
Scelzi is scheduled to make his World of Outlaws debut in his family owned No. 41s on Feb. 23 at Cotton Bowl Speedway in Paige, Texas, before venturing to LoneStar Speedway in Kilgore, Texas, the following night for the East Texas LoneStar Shootout.
“We’ve been busy this offseason building cars and preparing our family team car for my brother, Dominic, for the 2018 campaign so the two nights in Texas will also be a great opportunity to break everything in before he returns from racing in Australia,” Scelzi said. “I’m glad we have an opportunity like the two races in Texas to help prepare myself for the opportunity with Paul, Richard and Jennifer as well as make sure Dominic’s team is running well when he returns to the states the following week.”
Giovanni Scelzi made his 410ci winged sprint car debut last year. He scored a trio of King of the West-NARC Fujitsu Series feature victories, including his first ever on May 13 at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., thanks to a last-lap pass. The triumph made him the youngest winner in the series history.
Scelzi finished second in the series championship standings – only one point out of the lead.
