Inside Line Promotions – FRESNO, Calif. (Jan. 8, 2018) – Giovanni Scelzi is eagerly awaiting his Chili Bowl Midget Nationals debut this week.
Scelzi is one of eight drivers selected to pilot a NOS Energy Drink sponsored midget for Clauson-Marshall Racing at the 32nd edition of the marquee event, which is held inside the River Spirit Expo Center in Tulsa, Okla. Scelzi will compete on Tuesday during preliminary action prior to Saturday’s finale.
“I’m really excited,” he said. “I’ve had quite a bit of experience there on that track with micro sprints. Hopefully I can carry that over to midgets. I have the best equipment so there’s no excuses there. I just have to do my job.”
Scelzi has two midget starts under his belt, including one with Clauson-Marshall Racing last month in Illinois. While his midget experience isn’t vast, he is familiar with the indoor bullring where he will be competing this week.
Scelzi scored a Golden Driller in 2015, when he captured the winged ‘A’ class micro sprint main event out of nearly 200 competitors during the Tulsa Shootout. He posted a runner-up result at the event the following year.
The goal this week is to make his preliminary night A Main and go from there.
“If I can put it in the show on the prelim night and run in the top half I’d be pretty happy with that,” he said. “I think we’ll have a good opportunity to do that if a break or two goes our way.
“I want to thank the Tim Clauson, Richard and Jennifer Marshall, and the entire Clauson-Marshall Racing organization for giving me this amazing opportunity. I can’t wait to get there and start racing.”
