Wayne Johnson and the Two C Racing #2c team racked up seventh and fifth place finishes at last weekend’s Devil’s Bowl Winternationals at Devil’s Bowl Speedway near Mesquite, Texas. The Oklahoma City driver will have a couple of weekends off before the Lucas Oil ASCS National Series concludes their season at Cocopah Speedway near Yuma, Arizona.
The two-night Winternationals started Friday with Wayne starting fifth in his heat. “It was really greasy to start the night,” he says. “Usually, the first night at Devil’s Bowl is wet, and it was greasy. If you got off the bottom, it was slop. It was a freight train on the bottom and we ended up fourth.”
That was enough passing points to make the feature, but he would start back in row eight. “We were able to get up there to seventh,” says Wayne. “There was a little more room than the heats, but it was just tough to pass the first night. The car was really good both nights though.”
Wayne started seventh in Saturday’s heat. “We were able to get up to third,” he says. “The car was working really well again. That got us in the redraw, and you can guess what number we drew…the eight.”
The track was prepped right before the finale. “They went out and watered the top right before the feature,” says Wayne. “They gave us a quarter of a lap to hot lap, and I drove right off the track it was so wet! On the green, I was a little gun-shy of going off the edge and I came off of turn two running twelfth or so.”
Wayne would rebound, and charge into the top five. “It was non-stop for thirty laps, but we were able to get back up to fifth,” he says. “It was pretty racy by the end of the race. The car felt good.”
