Brady Bacon – Sunny Southwest Awaits!
(Bill W) October 25, 2017 – Warmer weather awaits Brady Bacon and the Dooling/Hayward Racing #63 team as they descend on Arizona Speedway near Queen Creek November 3 and 4 for the 50th Annual Western World. The team will be competing with both the USAC National and USAC/CRA 410 sprint cars and the USAC West Coast vs. Southwest 360 sprint cars for the weekend. The trip follows a charge from row seven to finish fourth with USAC at the Terre Haute Action Track October 14, and a pair of strong runs with the World of Outlaws in the Bacon/Marshall Motorsports #99 last weekend.
At Terre Haute, Brady timed in an uncharacteristic 14th quick. “The track was a lot heavier than we’ve seen it there in a long time,” he says. “That just caught us off guard a little bit and we were tight. The car wasn’t friendly in qualifying and we made a mistake on the second lap. That cost us a bunch of time. We also came out late, which usually isn’t good at Terre Haute.”
After nailing his heat race with a win, he lined up in row seven for the feature. “We made some changes throughout the night and made the car a little better,” says Brady. “Hopefully, next time, we’ll be better to start the night off. The car was good in the feature and we were able to run up to fourth, so things ended up decent.”
Last Friday night saw Brady with the World of Outlaws at Lakeside Speedway near Kansas City, Kansas. “We qualified thirteenth and ran fourth in the heat,” he says. “We started the feature 13th. We were running there for a while, and then we started making some ground up. We caught five cars in front of us in traffic, and I felt maneuverable in comparison to them. At that point, (leader Kerry) Madsen got into me, and we had a left rear tire going down from there. We just didn’t quite have the speed the rest of the race and ended up 13th. We were a little disappointed, because we were looking at a top ten without that issue.”
Saturday night the WoO moved on to the Salina Highbanks in Oklahoma. “They pushed the show through,” says Brady. “The rain was coming. My hat’s off to SLS and the Outlaws for doing that. I know they probably didn’t make as much money as they would have liked. The crowd was anticipating rain. They did a good job of getting it in though.”
Brady timed in 18th quick. “We were the first car out, and the track hadn’t come all the way in yet,” he says. “We made up some spots in our heat race. We started sixth and ran fourth. We almost got third, but made a mistake and lost that spot.”
That set him up inside row six to start the main event. “We were able to get up to tenth at one point, but I used my tire up a little bit,” says Brady. “On a restart, I tried to run the bottom and just didn’t have the tire to do it. (Daryn) Pittman got by us and we ran eleventh. We struggled towards the beginning of the year and it was good to be close to the speed we need to be. We’d like to carry the momentum since we won at Eldora into next year.”
Brady is ready to spend several weeks in the Southwest. It will also include a pair of shows in USAC National Midget competition where he and the Frank Manafort Racing #76M are second in points. “We always look forward to this trip,” he says. “I think we’ve won the Western World three or four times. We’re looking forward to getting there in the #63 for sure. I’m looking forward to some different tracks out there. We’re running a 360 and 410 in Arizona. We’re looking forward to the Oval Nationals at Perris too, as well as a midget race in Bakersfield, and we’ll run both the midget and a 360 on Turkey Night (in Ventura).”
