Inside Line Promotions – MESQUITE, Texas (Oct. 25, 2017) – Alex Hill enjoyed driving a fast sprint car last weekend at the 44th annual Winter Nationals hosted by Devil’s Bowl Speedway.
While she finished both nights of the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour doubleheader in the B Main, misfortune at the start of each race likely kept her from transferring to the main event.
“The results weren’t really what we were hoping for,” she said. “The car was super fast both nights and this was the best I’ve ever felt at Devil’s Bowl. We just had some things that kept us from making the A Main each night.”
Friday night saw Hill start and finish her heat race in the sixth position, which placed her seventh on the B Main starting grid.
“Something happened to the guy in front of me at the start and I got into him,” she said. “I lost a couple of spots from that, but then I gained them back. On the final lap, I was one spot from making the transfer and I just got too eager and drove it in too hard. I probably could have passed him if I hadn’t overdrove it.”
Hill finished seventh to miss a transfer by only one spot. She returned to the half-mile track on Saturday night and opened the action by placing sixth in a heat race. That lined her up in the 11th starting spot for the B Main.
“Two cars got together right after the start and one of them came down and got into me,” she said. “I came real close to tipping over, but I spun out and had to restart at the back in about 14th or 15th. My nose wing had collapsed, but I still made it up to eighth. Then a guy passed me right at the line so I finished ninth.
“I think if we wouldn’t have had that problem at the start we probably could have transferred to the A Feature. I was really happy with the way the car felt and ran both nights. It was just disappointing that we didn’t have better finishes to show it.”
Hill will be off the next couple of weeks before returning to action Nov. 9-11 at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz., with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
