Inside Line Promotions – TULARE, Calif. (Oct. 23, 2017) – Austen Wheatley wrapped up his season last weekend at the 24th annual Trophy Cup hosted by Thunderbowl Raceway.
“Every time we hit the track we got better and learned more,” he said. “I want to thank Willie Kahne for giving me the opportunity to drive for him and I hope we get to work together again.”
The event began on Thursday when Wheatley qualified 20th quickest in his group before he placed seventh in a heat race and ended 19th in a B Main.
“We were really, really tight,” he said. “The track was rough and I felt like I was in a Sea-Doo in deep sea waves. As soon as you’d get through one hole there were seven more in the corners.
“I’d never run a CS9 chassis before and Willie hadn’t worked with me so there was a learning curve. A lot of your success was dependent on qualifying and your luck in the heat race. There wasn’t a lot of passing so a lot of drivers who gained positions did so from attrition.”
Wheatley improved his results across the board on Friday as he timed in 10th quickest in his group before advancing from fourth to third place in a heat race. The night ended with an eighth-place finish in a B Main.
Saturday’s finale began with similar momentum as Wheatley won a heat race. Unfortunately, a mechanical problem a couple of laps into the B Main ended the weekend early with a DNF.
“I had fun working with Willie,” he said. “We changed a bunch of stuff and made good gains on it throughout the weekend.”
