LEDUC, Alb. (October 18, 2017) Skylar Gee’s first trip to the COMP Cams ASCS Mid-South Short Track Nationals was a successful one with the Carlan Services No. 99 rolling to a 10th place finish in Saturday’s $15,000 to win feature event.
“It was a great weekend for us. We unloaded and were fast right out of the gate so it definitely showed us we are getting better,” said Gee who is the leading Rookie with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
Coming out of Thursday’s opener with a 14th place in the 25-lap preliminary feature, Gee was 12th overall in event points. That brought running Friday into question, with the team deciding to go ahead and draw in. The decision was pivotal to the weekend’s success.
“We figured we’d a least try and run Friday. Whether we made the show or not, we wanted to learn about the track a little bit more, and ended up we ran way better than we did Thursday and jumped from 12th in points to fourth, so that really helped.”
Of the improved performance, Skylar gave special thanks to Sammy Swindell for jumping in and offering his expertise.
Still having to run in a Showdown Qualifier on Saturday, the 10 lap affair was worth double points with Gee capitalizing with a run from sixth to fourth to secure the final transfer into Saturday’s big dance.
“It was such a relief,” commented Gee, who made the show with an engine assembled by his father. “I’ve had to run a lot of B-Mains this year in order to make the show, and it helped us to where we weren’t having to scramble. I just felt like we were able to be more focused on what we needed to do in the feature.”
Looking ahead, Skylar will be in action at the 44th Devil’s Bowl Winter Nationals with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour presented by the MAVTV Motorsports Network on Friday, October 20 and Saturday, October 21. Both nights can be heard live on http://www.racinboys.com.
