Inside Line Promotions – MEEKER, Okla. (Oct. 10, 2017) – A last-minute decision to race led to a third-place finish for Zane Hendricks on Sunday night.
Hendricks had planned to race his midget at the Twister Nationals on Saturday at I-44 Riverside Speedway in Tulsa, Okla., until rain forced the race’s postponement to Oct. 21. It wasn’t until Sunday that he found a possibility to race last weekend.
“I just happened to notice that Red Dirt was racing micros that night and I talked my dad into going there,” he said.
A field of 27 micros were at Red Dirt Raceway and Hendricks got his evening off to a good start with a solid performance in his heat race.
“I started sixth and was able to move up to fourth right away and got up to third a couple of laps later and that was where I finished,” he said. “That put me pretty high up in passing points.”
The heat race effort earned Hendricks the third-place starting position for the A Main.
“I was up to second for a lap before dropping back to third and that’s where I finished,” he said. “The top three kind of pulled away from the field and got kind of strung out. Red Dirt is kind of a big track for micros.
“It felt pretty good to get a top-three finish, especially the way things have gone in the last few weeks. That was only the second time I’ve run a micro this year and the first time I’ve run a non- wing micro in over a year so I was pretty happy with that.”
With the Lucas Oil POWRi West Midgets Series having this weekend off, it opens the schedule to other possibilities.
“I’d like to race with the POWRi National Series in Illinois, but I don’t think we’ll go there after the way things went the last time we raced there,” he said. “I think we might race the micro at Red Dirt again since they’re having a big race that pays $1,000 to win.”
