Sam Hafertepe Jr $5000 Richer at the Fall Brawl

I-80 Speedway Greenwood, Nebraska (September 30, 2017)—The Casey’s Midwest Fall Brawl didn’t disappoint as it brought two of the top 360ci racing series in the country together, with 39 cars, to the 4/10 facility in the corn fields of Nebraska. It also brought a unique, but popular format to a track that is known for late model racing.

This format has been used at the Silver Dollar Nationals Late Model event and has been quite popular with the fans and drivers. Two thrilling rounds of heat race action with passing points from each round determined the starting lineup for the A feature.

It was Sam Hafertepe Jr, from Sunnyvale, TX who led all 30 laps and picked up his 15th Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour win of the season.

“We’ve crashed here, I think, just about every time we’ve been here over the past few years, so to come out here with a car as fast as it was, pace that race like we needed to, and come out on top, means a lot to me. This is one of those places I’ve always wanted to win at, and I finally got it done,” stated Hafertepe.

A Feature

The Saldana Racing Products pole sitter of Sam Hafertepe Jr lead the 24 car field to the green flag for the 30 lap, $5000 to win, A main event. Hafertepe led the first of 30 laps as Tim Kaeding held onto 2nd and Thomas Kennedy in 3rd. With 6 laps complete, Hafertepe held onto his lead by 6 cars over Kaeding as the field spread out and the leaders came into traffic. The groove was to the top side as the leaders ran 3 tenths of a second within each other. The lead had grown significantly 5 laps later as Hafertepe’s lead was 3 seconds over Kaeding before the yellow flew as Jordan Boston and Jason Martin collected each other in turn 2.

Hafertepe maintained his fire as he jetted our to a commanding 10 car lead over Tim Kaeding. The track began to slick off but created multiple grooves making for great racing action in the mid pack of the field. Half way through, the leaders had found lapped traffic as Kaeding began to close on Hafertepe. Two laps later, the man sitting 2nd place in Carpetland Nebraska 360 presented by Malvern Bank series points, Cody Ledger, spun by his lonesome in turn 4 possibly breaking something in the axle requiring a tow. Thirteen laps remained as Hafertepe was the leader followed by Tim Kaeding, Seth Bergman, Thomas Kennedy, and Wayne Johnson.

The restart continued for Hafertepe as he grew his lead but each lap saw Tim Kaeding scale closer and closer and shortening the gap. With 6 laps togo, Hafertepe found moisture and began to inch away but 4 laps laterTim Kaeding and Aaron Reutzel almost simultaneously blew their right rear tires bringing out the yellow with 2 laps togo. Reutzel reported to the work area to change the tire but made his way out to the track after the yellow lights went out for the restart. He was called back to the pits but the commands were ignored disqualifying him from the evening’s action. Hafertepe was the leader followed by Seth Bergman, Thomas Kennedy, Wayne Johnson, and Seth Brahmer.

The field returned to green but was soon brought back to yellow as Scott Bogucki tangled with another car putting him into the inside wall.

The restart allowed Seth Bergman one more shot at Hafertepe but was unable to catch him giving Hafertepe the win!

Carpetland Nebraska 360 Sprint Series presented by Malvern Bank points leader, Ryan Roberts, was able to collect $1000 from Searsboro Telephone & $200 from Speedway Motors for being the evening's hard charger. He was able to pass 9 cars during the 30 lap A feature.
