CG Motorsports- GLENPOOL, Ok. (Sept. 23, 2017) Matt Covington had a strong showing during the ASCS National, Hockett/McMillin Memorial triple header weekend at Lucas Oil Speedway. Covington came home 13, 6th, and 2nd over the course of all three nights.
On night one of the three-day race weekend, Covington was able to make the main through the heats and qualifier to come home 13th in the feature.
Friday night, Covington was able to win the heat while also going 4th to 3rd in the qualifier, earning the 10th starting position for the feature. Matt worked from the 10th spot in the main to bring his A-Rock Materials/Triple X chassis home 6th at the drop of the checkers.
Saturday night had Covington and the crew prepping the car for what he hoped to be another strong run on the final night of the three-day affair.
After the previous two nights’ point total, Matt found himself 6th in the points overall. He was to start 3rd row outside in the finale A feature.
At the drop of the green, Covington battled to advanced towards the front. After a handful of laps completed and a couple cautions, Covington found his way inside the top-5 running in 3rd. Covington gained the runner-up spot when Wayne Johnson’s night ended while battling a lap car, who was running 2nd at the time. Covington worked the high side the rest of the feature and was able to maintain a solid runner-up finish to close out the triple-header weekend.
“This past weekend turned out really well for us, especially considering there was a stout field of 50 plus cars,” stated Covington. “We struggled with a couple mechanical part issues the first two nights, but we still managed to come out 6th in the points for Saturday. The car was fast each night. It was great to cap off the weekend with a second-place run. I would have liked to get the win, but we didn’t have what it took to get around Sam. He almost gave it to us at the end by slipping up a little. But, after that last restart, we basically just kept our nose clean on the top. A bit earlier in the race we were starting to catch a little heat from the drivers behind us. So, I just did my best to hold onto that 2nd spot. We will be at I-80 this weekend and hope to keep the momentum up through the end of the season.”
