Inside Line Promotions – CANEY, Kan. (Sept. 18, 2017) – A fast car was thwarted by circumstances beyond Zane Hendricks’s control last weekend, resulting in a pair of DNFs in POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget Series competition.

“We were really fast both nights,” he said. “We just had some tough luck.”

The weekend began on Friday night at Red Dirt Raceway in Meeker, Okla., where he drew the pole position for his heat race.

“The track was really slick and I got in a little hot in the first corner and got passed by the eventual first and second-place cars,” he said. “I got back to the bottom and stayed there and finished third.”

Hendricks started 12th in the feature and charged through the field, working his way to fourth and challenging for third when mechanical problems struck.

“With about 10 laps left I lost all my brakes,” he said. “The rotor came completely off and was hanging on the axle. Then we had a red with about five laps to go. When they pushed me off the throttle stuck open and I had to shut it down, which ended our night. It was pretty disappointing since I felt we could have easily had a podium finish.”

Hendricks was credited with a 13th-place finish.

The team ventured to Caney Valley Speedway on Saturday. Unfortunately, heavy rain just after they arrived at the track delayed the evening’s program.

“The track was really heavy all night long from the rain,” he said. “I started on the pole in the heat, but the car pushed a bit going into the first turn. I had a good run coming off of turn four, but I pulled a wheelie and had to completely get out of the gas and ended up third.”

His heat race finish placed Hendricks in the ninth starting spot for the night’s main event.

“I got a good start and was up to fifth coming out of turn two when the yellow came on for some cars that piled up,” he said. “On the second start, four or five cars were right in front of me and one of them just rolled down the track and tore my front end completely up. Our night ended without being able to make a lap in the feature.

“It was a frustrating weekend, but at least we had a fast car.”

Hendricks, who was scored 14th, will take this weekend off before returning to action Sept. 29-30 at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Ill., for the Knepper and Meents Memorial Races with the POWRi Lucas Oil National Midget Series and POWRi Lucas Oil West Midget Series.
