After a long week off of racing due to weather, STM finally got the change to race. Friday night was the season opener for the Manitowoc County Expo Speedway. Scotty drew a 33 pill which set him to start 7th in the heat race. After racing on an extremely rough and dry race track, Scotty took a 6th place finish, but would have to run the B-main event. The track became rougher and faster as the night went on and was extremely rough on the equipment. After starting 5th for the B-main event, Scotty quickly took the lead after ONE lap! On a mission, Scotty charged down the backstretch, but then a caution came out. Thiel noticed something was wrong on the car and thought he may have a flat right rear tire, so he pulled in the work area. The crew hustled down to discover that a right rear torsion stop broke, which sets the ride height of the car, and ultimately was the “wrong” feeling Scotty noticed. The team got the car fixed but after he was pushed off again, the car still wasn’t fix and Scotty elected to pull off. After the B-main’s were finished the track THEN decided to cancel the A-Main events.
Saturday night, STM was off to the Sheboygan County Fairgrounds for the second night of racing with the PDTR series. Scotty drew a 48 pill and set him to start 7th in the heat race event. With a smooth and fast track, Scotty picked off cars and managed to finish in the second place position. With that finish in the heat, it set Scotty to start 7th in the nights A-Main event. The track began to dry out and was a bottom groove race track. The STM crew set the car up and believed that the top was going to form up a little. At the start of the A-main, Scotty jumped to the outside lane but couldn’t move forward as it was mostly marbles and dusty. By the time Scotty got back down to the bottom groove, he was in 14th place. Thiel slowly picked off some cars and managed to grab the 11th place finish for the night.
Overall, Saturday night’s racing went fairly well, the car was still in one piece and the team will focus on racing again this coming weekend Friday at Manitowoc, Saturday at Plymouth and possibly Sunday at the Kenosha County Fairgrounds in Wilmot, WI.
