Lonnie Wheatley, TULSA, Okla. (May 17, 2010) – It’s been more than four years since winged Sprint Cars have slung the Canyon Speedway Park clay. That changes this Saturday night however, when the ASCS Southwest Region takes to the semi-banked, 3/8-mile oval in Peoria, AZ, for the first time.
Saturday’s ASCS Southwest event marks the first winged Sprint Car event at Canyon Speedway Park since April 10, 2006, when Albuquerque’s Johnny Herrera stood in victory lane at the end of the night.
While Herrera is one of three different winners in as many ASCS Southwest events contested thus far in 2010, April 24 USA Raceway feature winner John Gaston of Peoria, AZ, is atop the Southwest point charts.
Gaston holds a ten-point advantage over two-time and reigning series champion Rick Ziehl of Las Cruces, NM, who topped the season opener on March 20.
Arizona native and current Knoxville, IA, resident Calvin Landis enters Saturday’s action third in points, 32 markers off the lead pace, with R.J. Johnson (Phoenix) and Avondale’s Kaylene Verville rounding out the current top five.
The balance of the current top ten in ASCS Southwest points includes J.T. Imperial (Mesa, AZ), Rick Boughan (Lima, OH), Steve Stone (Mesa, AZ), Mike Martin (Yuma, AZ) and Jessica Van Dyke (Tucson, AZ).
Saturday's ASCS Southwest action at Canyon Speedway Park is slated to go green at 7:30 p.m.
Peoria’s Canyon Speedway Park is located 25 miles north of Phoenix on I-17 to Exit 223, then 6.3 miles west. For more information, contact the track at 602-258-7223.
The ASCS Southwest Region is currently slated for 19 overall nights of competition in 2010, including 13 nights in Arizona and three New Mexico weekend doubles.
In its 19th year of sanctioning Sprint Car racing, the American Sprint Car Series brings the best of Sprint Car racing to approximately 100 different tracks throughout 30 states and Canada. Anchored by the Lucas Oil Sprint Car Series presented by K&N Filters, ASCS also consists of ten different Regions throughout the nation.
