Inside Line Promotions – PORT ROYAL, Pa. (Sept. 11, 2017) – Big Game Motorsports was on point throughout the Tuscarora 50 last weekend.
Kerry Madsen and the Muddy sponsored team set quick time during qualifying out of 60-plus competitors during both Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions races at Port Royal Speedway. That gives the team 19 Quick Time Awards during 46 races in which they attempted to qualify this season.
“We have a good package and we’ve been fast,” Madsen said. “It was a solid weekend.”
Madsen kicked off the weekend on Friday by setting quick time before advancing from fourth to third place in a heat race. That locked the team into the dash redraw. Unfortunately, Madsen drew the highest number available to start last in the second dash. He advanced from sixth to fifth place in the dash to line up on the outside of the fifth row for the A Main.
“The track was really quick,” he said. “You couldn’t just pass people. Every pass was a major undertaking. They are all fast cars. We got to fifth and was right on the back of fourth at the checkered flag. All you can do is go as hard as you can and see where you end up.”
Madsen picked up a handful of positions to post a fifth-place finish.
He returned to the half-mile oval on Saturday for the $50,000-to-win finale and once again he set quick time during qualifying. Madsen again picked up a position in a heat race to finish third. This time it started him 14th in the 50-lap main event.
“You couldn’t drive as hard as you wanted to because you had to get to the red flag stoppage with good tire wear,” he said. “You had to take care of the equipment. I was cautious on the first 25 laps.”
Madsen was up to eighth by the mid-race caution.
“I wasn’t as quick as I needed to be on the restart and lost ground,” he said. “The car came around after two or three laps. I got to the top and started passing cars. The car was really quick at the end of the race.”
Madsen charged into fifth place and he was on the heels of the drivers running third and fourth when the checkered flag was waved.
“It was a good weekend,” he said. “We got buried too deep, but we got two top fives so it was solid.”
The Muddy backed team will return to action this Friday at Clay County Speedway in Spencer, Iowa, and Saturday at Deer Creek Speedway in Spring Valley, Minn., with the IRA Series.
