Inside Line Promotions – KNOXVILLE, Iowa (Aug. 7, 2017) – Kerry Madsen feels confident heading into the 57th annual 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store.
The Big Game Motorsports driver enters the marquee event, which is held this Wednesday through Saturday at Knoxville Raceway, with momentum after a runner-up result during the Capitani Classic on Sunday evening.
“I’m looking forward to it,” he said. “The car is fast so I’m looking forward to seeing what we can do.”
Madsen and the Muddy sponsored team opened the Capitani Classic at Knoxville Raceway by setting quick time during qualifying for their third consecutive race. That was a huge advantage for Madsen as 69 competitors were on hand for the final tune-up before the Knoxville Nationals.
“When you have that many cars the format is always going to be tough,” he said. “To get a good time to set you up just to make the A Main is huge.”
Madsen advanced from fourth to third place during a heat race to lock into the $5,000-to-win Greenland Homes Pole Shuffle, which he won to start the main event on the pole.
“I wasn’t quick enough at the start of the race,” he said. “The middle stage of the race we pushed pretty hard. I started catching the leader in traffic. We just needed a bit more speed.”
Madsen dropped to third early in the main event before advancing to a runner-up result. It marked his fourth second-place finish of the season at Knoxville Raceway, where he will tackle sprint car racing’s biggest event this week.
“You have to get through that qualifying night and come out with some reasonable amount of points,” he said. “Then you can say now we have a chance.”
Madsen has made the Knoxville Nationals A Main each of the last four seasons and he’s started in the first two rows the last three years. He placed a career-best second in 2015 after notching a third-place result in 2014.
