CG Motorsports- Glenpool, Ok. (Aug 3, 2017) Matt Covington and crew are prepped and ready to roll for their qualifying night on Thursday at the famed Knoxville Raceway for the Great Southern Bank 360 Nationals.
Despite last Sunday’s engine trouble, Covington is heading into this event with a month’s worth of consistent, strong finishes along with a win.
Covington lost his primary National’s motor last Sunday at Mason City while running 2nd on the last corner of the final lap. But, he managed to limp across the line with only a few cars passing him. He was able to salvage a 5th place finish.
“We are very optimistic and excited to get this weekend’s racing underway,” stated Covington. “We left home a couple months back and have been doing pretty well. I am glad to be sitting here at one of my favorite tracks with a chance to end this swing on a high note. This year I think we can make the main on Saturday and have a great finish.”
“After qualifying decently on Saturday at Knoxville, we experimented bar-wise during the heat. That ended up not working very well and I lost a couple spots. So we went back to the setup we ran earlier this year for the B feature and were really fast. We started towards the back and ended up missing the transfer by one, finishing 3rd.”
“Sunday at Mason City was fixing to be a really great night before the motor blew. We won the heat and started the A main from the outside pole. We were running 2nd the entire race until the very last turn. That’s when the motor blew for whatever reason. We were lucky to have gotten across the line in 5th. And, unfortunately, that was the motor we were saving for the Nationals. But the one we just put in has performed well in Knoxville before. So, if our setup is on point and I do my part, then I’m sure we’ll be just fine. Tyler has been working very hard and giving me great cars to drive. We just rebuilt and freshened the car before heading up here last weekend, so I am really confident and looking forward to our qualifying night. Hopefully it will turn out to be a good points night and setup us up in the A on Saturday. Sunday we’ll put the 410 in and get switched over for the Capitani Classic to get dialed in for next week. I always look forward to this time of year.”
