Inside Line Promotions – MONTPELIER, Ind. (Aug. 1, 2017) – Shawn Dancer highlighted last weekend with a podium finish on Saturday at Montpelier Motor Speedway.
“I hadn’t been there in a couple of years so it was good to get back,” he said. “I think we ran second or third when we were there a few years ago.”
Qualifying second lined him up fourth in a heat race. After spinning on the second lap, which sent Dancer to the tail of the field, he rebounded to capture the heat race win.
“We were supposed to start second in the feature, but a mishap with another driver before the race started put us on the pole,” he said. “We led most of the race from the start, but Lap 17 brought some trouble.”
While trying to get around a lapped car, two other cars in front of Dancer got together causing him to check up and run down into the infield. When he came back onto the track, he was in second place.
“I was chasing down the leader and was almost back to him when I got a bit ambitious,” Dancer said. “There were probably two or three laps to go when I tried to squeeze myself between a lapped car and the wall.”
It didn’t work out as Dancer found himself bouncing down the frontstretch wall. It flattened his right front tire, broke the Jacob’s Ladder and lost his front wing.
“Somehow we still ended up third,” he said. “It was kind of tough to drive it, but I went for it and we ended up on the podium.”
The third-place finish was Dancer’s third top five of the season.
He opened the weekend the previous night at Limaland Motorsports Park in Lima, Ohio, where he set quick time during qualifying before advancing from fourth to third place in a heat race during the Run for the Rabbit XVII event. Dancer lined up seventh in the feature, but he was involved in a wreck that ended his night early.
“We won the Run for the Rabbit race back in 2014 and it was my very first win,” he said. “I was hoping to get back to Victory Lane again, but it just didn’t work out.”
Dancer finished 18th.
