ASCS Frontier Region makes Atomic debut this weekend

Andrew Kunas - COEUR d'ALENE, Idaho - After two weeks of intense competition with the National Tour, the Brodix Frontier Region of the American Sprint Car Series continues their summer marathon run as it enters a third straight week of competition with its debut at Atomic Motor Raceway.

The dirt oval, near Blackfoot in southeast Idaho, has previously hosted the old ASCS Rocky Mountain Region. After last September's events were cancelled due to poor weather the Frontier Region will finally make its debut at Atomic for the "Rumble in the Desert" on Friday and Saturday nights.

The series goes into the weekend with a new points leader as well. With finishes of 10th and 9th, best amongst Frontier Region drivers both nights, against the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour this past weekend at Black Hills Speedway, David Hoiness of Billings, Montana is now at the top of the points standings.

While Atomic Motor Raceway has not been a regular ASCS stop, or sprint cars in general, Hoiness is not a stranger to the 1/3-mile dirt oval. Back on July 3, 2011 Hoiness picked up a main event win at Atomic Motor Raceway with the Big Sky Sprints, a forerunner of the current ASCS Frontier Region. Driving his family's No. 27DD Wesmar-powered J&J, Hoiness is looking for a repeat of that success at this weekend's Rumble in the Desert. Hoiness, however, is still looking for his first trip to Rod End Supply Victory Lane with the ASCS Frontier Region this season.

Hoiness holds a 41-point edge over D.J. Brink of Sturgis, South Dakota. Rich Martin of Cheyenne, Wyoming currently sits third, 67 points back of Hoiness.
Another driving seeing a perfect opportunity for a rebound is Shepherd, Mont. driver Damon McCune, who last year won an unsanctioned event, his first main event win, at Atomic. McCune crashed and did not race in the main event Friday night at Black Hills Speedway and did not finish the feature on Saturday either. Having performed well in Frontier Region only events, McCune looks to get back on track this weekend at the site of his first sprint car main event win. Despite the tough luck with the ASCS National Tour in recent weeks, McCune sits fourth in Brodix ASCS Frontier Region points.

Billings driver Mindy McCord, who is chasing top rookie sprint car honors in the Frontier Region, is currently sitting fifth in the Brodix ASCS Frontier Region point standings. McCord scored finishes of 13th and 14th against the ASCS National drivers at Black Hills Speedway and gained valuable experience she hopes to put to good use this weekend at Atomic.

Texas drivers Sam Hafertepe Jr. and Aaron Reutzel, the last two ASCS National champions, were feature winners at the Rushmore Rumble last weekend at Black Hills Speedway. This week marks the third of five consecutive weeks of action for the Brodix ASCS Frontier Region. Following this weekend's Rumble in the Desert in southern Idaho, the series has events in South Dakota, Wyoming and Montana the next two weeks.

Karts begin racing at 6:00 p.m. both nights with the Brodix ASCS Frontier Region sprint cars and other local classes racing at 7:00 p.m for the Rumble in the Desert, expected to be one of the biggest shows Atomic Motor Raceway has ever seen.
