With the sun shining bright and the temperatures perfect, the Sportsman Sprints, PHRA Dwarf Cars, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks and Outlaw Tuners took to the 3/8 banked clay oval on Saturday night at Grays Harbor Raceway
Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks:
Shane Kerrigan of Aberdeen led the field to the green flag during the 25 lap Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks feature with Hoquiam's Jason Tole on the outside. Kerrigan took the lead momentarily until the caution flag flew for Zeb Conrad of Montesano spinning to a stop on the front stretch. During the caution, race leader Kerrigan went to the pit area giving up the lead to Oakville's Brian Harding. Harding led the field down with Tole right on his back bumper. Multiple cautions allowed Tole and Jack Parshall of Hoquiam to try and track down Harding for the lead. Tole took the lead out of turn four on lap 6, while Parshall looked to the inside for second but couldn't make the pass.
Contract between Harding and Parshall saw Harding go back into the third position, as Spanaway's Tom Hecker looked to track down Harding for third. Harding saw mechanical issues later in the feature giving up third to Hecker. Tole had Parshall right on his back bumper, with Tole on the low side of the raceway until Lap 21, Tole slowed to a stop on the front stretch bringing out the caution giving up the lead to Parshall. At the end of a caution filled Street Stock feature, Parshall picked up the win, Montesano's Scott Fritts, Mike Mann of Shelton, Hecker, and Longview driver Josh Anthony rounded out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Kerrigan and Tole, with Kerrigan picking up fast time.
PHRA Dwarf Cars:
Brian Taylor of Tumwater and Longview driver Josh Rodgers set the front row of the 25 lap PHRA Dwarf Car feature. The initial start was called back for a jump start, setting up a complete restart. Rodgers took the early lead from Taylor but the caution flag quickly flew for Andy Lemmons of Longview, spinning and collecting Carson driver Rich Holbert. Rodgers once again took the early lead bringing Happy Valley, Ore driver Leo Ward into the second spot. Portland, Ore driver Ryan Martinez quickly moved into second past Ward, setting his sights on Rodgers for the lead. Lap 3 saw Martinez take the lead and quickly pulled away. The battle for second between Rodgers, Ward and Mollala, Ore driver Henry Corbin III was the race to watch. Ward moved into second as Corbin III moving into the third spot from Rodgers.
A mid race restart allowed Corbin III and Ward a shot at Martinez. Corbin III and Ward battled for second as Martinez pulled away. Martinez worked his way through traffic expanding his lead as Corbin III and Ward sat in the second and third positions. At the end of the feature Martinez picked up the win, with Corbin III, Ward, Rodgers and Hillsboro, Ore driver Jeremiah Hester rounding out the top five. Heat race winners earlier in the evening were Rodgers, Ward, and Martinez.
Sportsman Sprints:
Sedro Woolley driver Trevor Cook took the early lead in the Sportsman Sprint feature with Kelsey Carpenter of Burlington moved into second. The first caution of the feature came out for Bill Rude of Mt. Vernon as he slowed to a stop on lap 3. Cook led the field down with Carpenter and Edmond's driver Devin Barnes in third. Cook continued to pull away from Carpenter to almost a straightaway lead. The battle for third between Barnes and Michael Millard of Renton was the race to watch. Millard look to the outside a few times but couldn't make the pass.
Late in the race Carpenter started to catch Cook as mechanical issues seem to cause Cook to slow. Carpenter made the pass on Cook out of turn three on lap 19 as Cook slowed to the infield. Carpenter ran the low side of the raceway and went on to pick up the Sportsman Sprint feature, Barnes, Millard, Bellingham driver Kevin Kirkpatrick and Bailey Sucich of Granite Falls rounded out the top five. Heat race winner earlier in the evening was Barnes with Kirkpatrick picking up fast time.
Outlaw Tuners:
Devon Harper of Olympia and Shelton's Dale Speas set the front row of the 15 lap feature. Speas took the early lead as Harper had a battle for second with Tenino driver Josh Wharton. Tyler Sundstrom of Aberdeen moved into third as the battle for the lead between Wharton and Speas was the race to watch with Wharton taking the lead on lap 2. The caution flag flew for Aberdeen's Ryan Onasch as he spun to a stop in turn four. Wharton led Sundstrom and Speas to the green on the restart. Aberdeen's Cory Sweatman battled Speas for third, as both drivers went back and fourth for the position. A mid race caution saw Shelton's Samantha Stevens slow to a stop on the front stretch.
On the restart Wharton had tough company with Sundstrom at his back bumper. Wharton slowly pulled away as Sundstrom had Sweatman looking to make a pass for second. Late in the race lap traffic became a factor allowing Sundstrom and Sweatman to catch Wharton and make an attempt for the lead. Wharton took the white flag with a few lap cars ahead battling for position and held on to pick up the win over Sundstrom, Sweatman, Speas and Chad Norton of Tenino. Heat race winners went to Sundstrom and Wharton.
Racing will resume next Saturday night with 360 Sprint Cars, Shipwreck Beads Modifieds, Cut Rate Auto Parts Street Stocks and the Outlaw Tuners. Gates will open at 5:30PM with racing beginning at 7PM.
