Inside Line Promotions – WEST MEMPHIS, Ark. (June 19, 2017) – Sammy Swindell was well on his way to not only winning the Hooker Hood Classic, but sweeping the marquee event last Saturday at Riverside International Speedway before bad luck struck.

Swindell, who was driving for A.G. Rains, won both the dash and a heat race and he was leading the main event just after the midpoint of the race when a tire problem occurred.

“The night was going pretty good, but the right front tire came off the bead,” he said. “There wasn’t any contact. It just popped off somehow. I don’t really know why. It bounced a bit and I was on the right front and it came off.”

Swindell had put himself in a great position up to that point beginning with a dash win. He then charged from fifth to capture a heat race triumph.

“It was all good,” he said. “We spent a little time last week and found some things from running both cars. We sat down and looked at everything. We had a good setup right off the trailer. We didn’t do a whole lot to it all night.”

Swindell ranked second in overall points, which lined him up on the outside of the front row for the 30-lap main event.

“The polesitter took off way early and was quite a bit ahead of me down the front chute,” he said. “He led the first three laps or so. I made a couple of good corners. I got a run under him and passed him. Someone said we had a half a lap on the field before we had a caution. About halfway through is when we lost the right front tire and had to go to the back. The track was getting harder and harder to pass. I got through a few of them, but got tied up with a couple of cars. It was so wet on the bottom you couldn’t run down there. Guys were running the middle and taking up so much room getting in the corner. I was running the top and got stuck behind a couple drivers too long.”

Swindell led more than half of the race before the tire incident. He rallied from the back to place fifth during the closing laps.
