Jason Martin and the BM Motorsports team finally parked it in victory lane after being in contention for the first half of the season. “Honestly, I’ve been kind of down on myself a little bit lately, we should have had 3 or 4 wins so far this season and we just didn’t get the job done,” says Martin. “I’m just glad to finally prove to myself that I can still win at a higher level and the best part, it wasn’t one of those gimme kind of race tracks, that was challenging and I really enjoyed it.”
Junction Motor Speedway hosted the Nebraska 360 Sprint Series as well as the NCRA Sprints from Kansas in a co-sanctioned event that brought a stout field of contenders to compete at the newly reshaped 3/8 mile oval. After winning the night’s opening heat race in a commanding fashion, the BM Motorsports crew made just a few minor changes to the car and set their sights on the feature. The racing proved to be fast and furious over the course of the feature. Martin started in the 5th position and narrowly missed out on a front row starters spin on the opening corner of the first lap. Fortunately missing that crash, Jason would restart in the 3rd position. As the field went green, Martin jumped in line on the top of the race track in 4th going into turn 1. By lap 2, Martin had figured out the fast line around the top of the race track and would pass Don Droud Jr. for 3rd on the exit of turn 2. The lead trio would dice their way through lap cars by the 5th round, until a caution would come out with 20 laps remaining.
Ryan Roberts brought the field to the green flag on the restart, with Danny Jennings and Martin in tow. By this point in the race, Jason and few other courageous drivers had worked in the cushion entering turn 1, where they were entering all four wheels above the ledge that had previously been formed. “I rolled around there on the yellow and thought I could get it packed down enough to be able to make it work, luckily there must have been a few other guys that had seen me packing it down and helped out,” Martin said. “The cushion got to be so thick and rough that guys were short cutting the corner and were sliding up to the berm on the exits of the corners making it a real weird line to try and perfect. Once I got to where I could enter all four above the lip, I knew we were going to be a threat!” Martin reeled in a half straight away advantage and he put a move on Jennings to take over 2nd. With lap traffic in play, Martin was taken back about 10 car lengths on Roberts, the leader. Martin caught Roberts and pulled a slide job on Roberts and a lap car in turn 4, to take over the lead with 5 laps to go. It wasn’t over though, as both Roberts and Martin attempted sliders at lap cars and each other through the end of the race. Martin was able to prove his strength and secure the win. After the races, Martin commented, “After the last few weeks of truck issues, generator problems, and crew guys up and leaving the team, it just feels so good to be able to put 25 good laps together and come out with the win.” “I can’t thank my wife and kids enough for all their hard work and sacrifices they’ve gone through to help us out. I’m sure I wasn’t the most pleasant person to be around the last couple weeks, but they understand and stand behind me 100% and wouldn’t ask anything more out of me than to get up on the wheel and get the job done.”
The team had planned on a full week of racing the ASCS National tour Speed Week throughout the states of Texas, Oklahoma, and Missouri. Jason says, “We’ve got so many things going on at work and other guys out representing the company as well as the unexpected expenses we had on our race hauler the last couple weeks, it’s just the smart thing to do.” “We’ll try and enjoy this win a little bit.” So with Jason’s obligations to EMI and BM Motorsports financial and current crew member situation, they’ve decided to stay a little closer to home and race the Sprint Series of Nebraska race at Eagle Raceway on Tuesday, June 13th with the World of Outlaws as the main attraction. Then they will attend another Nebraska 360 Sprint Series event in Norfolk, NE, on Saturday, June 17th and again travel north on Sunday, June 18th to a new track for the team to compete in a Sprint Series of Nebraska Racesaver event at the bullring in Park Jefferson, South Dakota. Jason said, “It’s unfortunate that we’ve had this major week as a marquee week for the team.” “It’s always such a good week to go and get a lot of racing in with the absolute best in the business, but I do have a career outside of driving race cars and that is what supports my family.” “So I’ve decided it will be best to stay closer to home and take care of some obligations we have here at EMI and save a little bit of money on the race team as far as traveling expenses go. I’m confident we can knock off a couple more wins this week so we’ll see how it goes!”
