Canyon Speedway in Phoenix, Arizona is going to be home of the 2009 Southwest Championships. With an all non wing event planned for Thanksgiving weekend it is sure to be a great show for drivers and fans. Sprint Car, and Midget drivers will be competing for $2000 to win on championship night also on the slate will be the Mini Sprints. The Midget event is part of the National Midget Driver of the Year points, so there should be some big names in town to put on a show.
The Ortega Team will be making the trip over to Phoenix on Wednesday for practice night to get some laps in on the track. After a Thanksgiving Day feast and maintenance, it will be time for the last event for Derrik Ortega this year. The competition should be tough, but Derrik and Manny have been putting in hours in the shop to make sure the car is ready to rock. Cody Mansfield will be making the trip to help out, and there will be plenty of support from family in the Phoenix area.
Derrik is looking forward to closing out the season with a good showing, while he hasn’t run a lot of non wing shows he has become more comfortable in the car and learned more to get the car around the track. He will be taking his experience working on a couple non wing cars this summer, and racing the last couple races at Hollywood Hills, to tackle the tough competition and end the season on a high note at the 2009 Southwest Championships.
