Inside Line Promotions – ELMA, Wash. (June 5, 2017) – Austen Wheatley set quick time during qualifying last Saturday at Grays Harbor Raceway for the fourth time in six races this season.
“Our shifter cable broke to open the night so it wasn’t the best start,” he said. “We got that fixed and went out for hot laps and my engine was popping and sputtering. We came back in and tried to fix it. It was still doing that in qualifying, but we went quick time. We found out it was the mag.”
The Doug Rutz owned team fixed the problem prior to a Summer Thunder Sprint Series heat race, which Wheatley started on the outside of the second row.
“The groove was around the bottom of the track,” he said. “I was on the outside of Roger Crockett racing for third. When he cleared me Colton Heath got under me and that shuffled me to fifth. The top four got their qualifying time back and I would have been in the feature redraw if I ended fourth or better.”
Wheatley was unable to regain fourth and missed making the feature redraw. That lined him up on the inside of the seventh row for the main event.
“The track was really slick and dirty,” he said. “My wing was in the trunk from Lap 2. I felt like I was hydroplaning. We were going nowhere at a high rate of speed. I backed up to 15th and picked off a few positions throughout the rest of the race.”
Wheatley capped the night with a 10th-place result, which marked his third top 10 of the season.
