EL PASO, Texas (May 24, 2017) Taking a brand new EMI built racecar to Lawton Speedway to take on the American Bank of Oklahoma ASCS Red River Region presented by Smiley’s Racing Products, John Carney II rolled past the checkered flag third to bring his steak of podium finishes to five in both 305cid and ASCS competition.
“I was really pleased with the speed we had in the car, just made a few mistakes,” said Carney who wheeled the Scott Brown owned Lubbock Wrecker Service No, 11x.
The race was also good for the team to gather notes for their return during Speedweek on June 14.
Getting the outside of the front row for the A-Feature, Carney sat just to the right of Sam Hafertepe, Jr. Winning the drag race into the first two turns, John was able to stave off Hafertepe until slower traffic brushed off his momentum on Lap 14.
“I got a little stalled out on a lapped car and got pinch going into three and that made me bike up really bad. There was a little rough spot there, and I just hit it at an angle the car didn’t like. Right there is when I forfeited the lead.”
Under caution one lap later, John tried a slide job on the No. 15h with no success.
“The caution gave Sam the advantage of an open track, but it made me move around and start running the top of three and four. At first there wasn’t really anything up there, but we started getting momentum and MPH down the front stretch. I was closing in on him, and coming to the last lap, I was hoping he would get stalled on a lapped car and I could make some kind of wild attempt at the finish, but I ended up slipping off the top and gave up a spot, but I was really pleased with the speed we had.”
Up next for Carney, the team will look to pick up wins with the Griffith Truck and Equipment ASCS Gulf South Region as the series heads for a three night swing through RPM Speedway (Crandall, Texas) on Friday, followed by Devil’s Bowl Speedway (Mesquite, Texas) on Saturday, and Lone Star Speedway (Kilgore, Texas) on Sunday.
