(Bill W) May 17, 2017 – Wayne Johnson and the Two-C Racing team are trying to get back to basics after a busy weekend. After coming from the tail of his heat to eventually checker eighth with the Lucas Oil ASCS National tour at Lakeside Speedway in Kansas City, Wayne struggled in regional action at Humboldt Speedway in Kansas. Saturday night, in the 410 class at Knoxville, he registered a top ten finish. The team looks to run ASCS Red River regional events in Oklahoma this weekend at Lawton and Creek County Speedway near Sapulpa.
A strong 36-car field gathered at Lakeside last Thursday. “As luck would have it, we drew in the back of the heat,” says Wayne. “We were able to get up to fifth, which didn’t get us in the redraw, but got us in the show starting 14th.”
Wayne looked good in the feature, climbing to an eighth-place finish. “We were pretty good,” he says. “We just started too far back. There was a good field of cars there and a fast track, so we felt good about driving up to eighth.”
Friday, the Oklahoma City driver signed in to run with the Red River region in Humboldt. “We just weren’t any good at Humboldt,” says Wayne. “We started third in the heat and run second, and started third in the feature and backed up to ninth. We were just off.”
That was the point that Wayne decided to get back to some of the basics. “Bud (Johnson) and I had a pow wow the next day, and he asked why I was doing what I was doing on the setup,” he says. “I’d never done some of those things before. We looked at the book and he was right. I’ve felt one way, so I keep working on it and working on it, and it had just made it worse.”
They took a new approach Saturday with the 410 at Knoxville. “We went back to ground zero at Knoxville,” says Wayne. “We got it going better. We timed in decent (12th quick) and we were able to win the heat from the second row. Clean air is our best friend. So we felt good headed into the feature.”
Starting sixth, Wayne would checker tenth. “I’m still just too tight behind cars,” he says. “We were tight from the get-go in the feature. I’m struggling a little bit with balance on the car. To make matters worse, we had something cut our tire. By the end of the race, we were down to six pounds of air in the tire. So we felt good about coming out of there with a top ten considering that.”
The schedule will only get busier as the summer wears on. “We’re figuring some things out,” says Wayne. “We need to. We’re fixing to get really busy here in the next month. Racing more is definitely going to help us.”
