Inside Line Promotions – WOODHULL, N.Y. (May 16, 2017) – Joe Trenca produced arguably his best night of racing this season last Saturday at Woodhull Raceway with the Patriot Sprint Tour.
The Mucci Motorsports driver charged from fifth to win a heat race, which locked him into the feature redraw. Unfortunately, Trenca pulled the second-highest number – seven – to start the main event on the inside of the fourth row.
“We were up to fourth really quickly and I battled with third place for 90 percent of the race,” he said. “The track was one lane and didn’t slick off. It was dominant on the bottom. We got to traffic and I was sick of following third. I tried rolling the top for a couple of laps. I tried to make something happen and it cost us a few positions. I can’t really knock myself for trying. In hindsight with points on the line we should have stayed in fourth.”
Trenca lost a couple of positions in the closing laps to place seventh, which tied his season-best result and gives him three straight top-10 finishes in 360ci winged sprint car competition. It also moved Trenca up to third place in the Patriot Sprint Tour American championship standings.
“Overall it was a good night,” he said. “Another top 10 with the 360 is great. We’re only 21 points out of the lead and only one point out of second. We gained a little.”
Trenca will return to Patriot Sprint Tour competition this Friday at Raceway 7 in Conneaut, Ohio, before competing with the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series on Sunday at Weedsport Speedway in Weedsport, N.Y., for the Empire State Challenge.
“I’m really looking forward to this weekend,” he said. “I enjoy racing at both tracks. We’ve done really well at Raceway 7 and Weedsport is close to home so it should be a great weekend.”
Trenca has earned a top-10 finish at Raceway 7 during each of the last three seasons.
