Inside Line Promotions – WILLIS, Texas (May 8, 2017) – Zane Lawrence added two more top-five finishes to his strong start to the season last weekend with the ASCS Gulf South Region to remain within striking distance of the championship.
The weekend kicked off last Friday at Heart O’ Texas Speedway in Waco, Texas, where Lawrence advanced from third place to win a heat race and make the feature redraw. He then pulled the No. 1 during the random redraw to start the main event on the pole of the 2nd annual Gene Adamchik Memorial.
“The track was pretty locked down after the heat race so I knew if we could get out front in the feature we would be tough to beat,” he said.
On the initial start, ASCS officials called a jumped start on Lawrence and penalized him a row. He battled for a podium position throughout the main event before ending with a fourth-place result.
“I feel like we could have brought home a win if it wasn’t for that penalty,” he said. “We had a good car all night and I definitely feel like we had the winning car, but sometimes that’s how it goes.”
The weekend concluded on Saturday at Gator Motorplex, where Lawrence rallied from seventh to fifth place in a heat race. That started him on the outside of the seventh row for the main event at the 5th annual Nolan Wren Memorial.
Lawrence maneuvered his way through the field to finish fifth, which marked his sixth top-five result of the season. He ranks second in the ASCS Gulf South Region championship standings.
“It was locked down on the bottom so the only way we could make passes was to boot everybody off the bottom,” he said. “That’s exactly what we did. We had to start farther back than we would have liked, but we made it work and earned our top five.”
Lawrence will be back in action this Saturday at Superbowl Speedway in Greenville, Texas, with the NCRA Sprint Bandit Series.
