Inside Line Promotions – ATTICA, Ohio (April 18, 2017) – Kevin Mingus put together the best showing of his young dirt sprint car racing career during the HD Supply Spring Nationals last weekend at Attica Raceway Park.

Mingus raced his way into the 305ci winged sprint car A Main both nights and even led a lap in Saturday’s feature.

“This weekend was a real confidence booster,” he said. “I got to lead a few laps and experience what clean air is and I got to battle with one of the best 305 sprint car drivers in the country in John Ivy and I learned a lot. We have come a long, long way in a very short time. We’ve only had 20 dirt races under our belts.”

The weekend began on Friday, when Mingus started sixth in his heat race and finished seventh.

“I got crossed up and hit the curb and it broke the torsion stop and we lost the entire torsion bar,” he said. “We scrambled to get the car fixed. It was tough to get the arm angles right, but we were able to transfer out of the B Main for the first time on dirt. We battled through some adversity and finished in a transfer spot, which gave me a ton of confidence.”

After his third-place showing in the B Main, Mingus started 18th in the A Main and he drove it up to a 13th-place result.

Saturday showcased the finale and Mingus drew a great pill to start on the pole of his heat race. He finished second to advance into the feature redraw, in which he drew another good pill to start on the pole for the feature.

“I got to lead a lap and battle up front for a while,” he said. “That was the best feeling in the world. I got a little too excited and drove in and hit some oil and spun. We ended up 16th, but I learned a lot again. We are making the right adjustments on the car and communicating well. My uncle, who worked on asphalt late models and modifieds in Alaska and out west, is back home after 35 years. He helped us a bunch. The chemistry on the team and the communication between us is starting to gel.

“We got the car all wrapped with all the new sponsors. That set the tone for the weekend. We look like a real race team and that has given us all a boost. I’ve also been doing a lot of iRacing and they let us put our setups on the car and it really has helped me.”

Mingus plans to race this Friday at Attica Raceway Park and Saturday at Fremont Speedway in Fremont, Ohio, to kick off that track’s season. It is also the opening night for the JLH General Contractor FAST 305 Series presented by Engine Pro.

“The more seat time the better,” he said. “We will be racing with a bit of a heavy heart. We just found out my aunt has cancer and isn’t doing well. When we raced asphalt and won the Buckeye Super Sprint Series she sponsored us and the series with her business, the Pie Factory. She would want us to keep plugging away so we’re determined to do just that for her.”
