Well it was a near win on Friday night and a strong showing on Saturday night that ended with a flat right rear for the Covington Motorsports team. Matt and the team would make the trip to Oklahoma City on Friday and Lawton on Saturday night for the ASCS Sooner region races. With a strong 2nd place heat race finish, Matt would start the A-Main outside row two on Friday. Matt would jump from 4th to take the lead on lap 2 and pace the field for the next 21 laps. While lapping the field Matt would run up on a lap car that was running the same bottom grove as Matt. With Matt bunched up on the bottom fighting the lapper, Nick Smith was able to drive his sprinter in on the top side and sling shot pass Matt to grab the lead. On the next lap the yellow would come out for an over-heating race car stopped in turns three and four. Matt would have one last chance at Nick as the green would fly with 3 laps to go. Matt would close up tight on Nick in the closing laps and try to get around. In the end the laps would run out and Matt would have to settle for runner-up honors.
On Saturday the team would make the trip down I-44 to Lawton Speedway tied for the Sooner Region points lead. Thinks to Brian at the draw table, Matt was able to get a good heat race starting position and outrace Brady Bacon to take the first heat race win. This would put Matt in the re-draw were Brian would draw 6 and start Matt outside row three for the feature. As the green flag was thrown, Matt would be easy on the gas and work the bottom to advance a couple positions. Matt would work his way up to fourth working hard on the back of Joe Wood Jr. for 3rd when the race night would make a turn for the worse. Running 2nd, Kolt Walker got sideways in front of the field. Matt would try to escape Kolt's sideways race car, but still make slight contact with the right rear. This would cause the mud cover to be pushed into the bleeder tube and knock it loose from the wheel. As the next green flag run resumed Matt's right rear would come to a flat bringing his night to an end.
All in all it was a very strong weekend for the Covington Motorsports team. Hopefully the team will be able to prepare a fast race car and gain some of the series points back this weekend at Creek County Speedway. Matt is sitting 2nd in ASCS Sooner points and hopes to close that gap starting this weekend. Stay in tune with Matt through the team website, www.mattcovington95.com and a very special thanks goes out to T&L Foundry, C.G.
