Inside Line Promotions – QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. (April 10, 2017) – Dominic Scelzi and his family owned sprint car team are making strides.

The Roth Motorsports backed team tackled a pair of World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series races in the desert last weekend, when the action began on Friday at Cocopah Speedway in Somerton, Ariz., for the Yuma Valley Showdown.

“We had good laps in qualifying, but just didn’t have the speed we needed to time in well,” Scelzi said. “We changed plugs and it ran better in the heat race. In the heat I made a couple of decisions that didn’t pan out, but we were able to get in the show.”

Scelzi qualified 18th quickest before he finished sixth in a heat race to lock into the 18th starting position for the main event.

“The track was really slick to the wall,” he said. “It seemed like everyone was going to the bottom. I stayed up high and we were able to get to 13th. As the race went on I lost a couple of positions and fell to 15th. We had a restart with a few laps to go and I had burned my right rear tire off so I couldn’t keep myself in the rubber.”

Scelzi held on for an 18th-place result. Here is a link to watch the main event: https://youtu.be/nxJpdlp2a9w.

The team ventured to Arizona Speedway on Saturday for the Arizona Desert Shootout, which marked Scelzi’s debut at the oval.

“It was a pretty neat race track,” he said. “We went out second and were quick time for a little bit before we slowly fell down the ladder. We ended up being 10th quickest, which was our best result of the year. We definitely made an improvement there.”

Scelzi timed in 10th quickest overall. He then finished fifth in a heat race to lock into the 13th starting position for the main event.

“I got ancy on the start and lost a couple of spots,” he said. “We pretty much ran 15th the whole race. We raced hard with Logan Schuchart, Daryn Pittman and Greg Wilson. It seemed like 10th place was only a little bit ahead the whole race.”

Scelzi capped the weekend with a 15th-place finish, which was his third top 15 of the season.

“We had to fight for it,” he said. “I would say we persevered and got better at what we’ve been struggling with. I think we learned what we needed to learn. We made big strides by the end of Saturday night.”

Scelzi plans on competing this Friday at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., before driving for Nick McColloch on Saturday at Placerville Speedway in Placerville, Calif., with Sprint Car Challenge Tour.
