EL PASO, Texas (April 5, 2017) Getting a chance to go race near his hometown this past weekend, John Carney II took on the Consolidated Solar Technology ASCS Southwest Sprint Car Shootout at the Southern New Mexico Speedway in Las Cruces, N.M. with a weekend highlight third place finish.
“It was a great weekend really. We didn’t tear up anything and got to see family, friends, and visit with some of our sponsors,” said the driver of the MVT/Lubbock Wrecker No. 11x.
“It also worked out because we were able to try and test a few things. We’ve got some ASCS National races we’re running later in the year and we had two very different tracks that worked perfectly. We’d been trying some stuff to get our car hooked up, and took the chance to take it a step further to figure out what worked and what didn’t.”
Having to come out of the B-Feature on Friday night, John was able to climb to a sixth place finish in a race that was uninterrupted by cautions.
“The car was too tight in the Heat. We got it better in the B-Main, and it was great in clean air, but when I got to lapped traffic, it started misbehaving, so for the feature we took a big swing at it,” explained Carney.
“The car was better, other than our first lap hiccup. I lost three spots, if not more, so I had to come back from around 18th to sixth which wasn’t too bad since the race didn’t have a caution. It wasn’t perfect, but again we were trying things that we hadn’t done before but now we know the direction we want to go when we get a track like we had on Friday."
Seeing a much slicker racing surface the following night, John was able to position the No. 11x into the night’s redraw. Drawing the sixth starting spot, the start saw Carney move quickly into the top three.
“The track was really more in our favor as a team with things we’ve been working on in trying to get the car to grip a little bit better and actually we took it a little too far. It wasn’t lock down rubber, but I felt like if we hadn’t gone quite as far with the setup, we could have picked up another spot. I don’t know if I could have gotten Herrera without the help of traffic though. His car was good all weekend.”
