Glenpool, Okla. CG Motorsports (April 5, 2017) Matt Covington and team tackled the I-30 Speedway in Little Rock, Ark. this past weekend with the ASCS Mid-South/Red River region. Covington had to work his way through the field after starting 16th in the feature due to a 3rd place effort in the heat.
“We just didn’t have the heat race we needed to start up front in the feature,” stated Matt. “We started on the outside of the front row, but the track was still better on the bottom. I tried to beat them into turn one on the start but just came up short. I got pushed out which bounced us back to third. Without any passing points, we had to start 16th in the feature.”
Covington went to work at the drop of the green and fought all race long. He was able to advance enough positions to come home 6th from 16th at the drop of the checkers.
“We were really good in the feature. Tyler had the car very drivable and fast,” said Covington. “The track started to widen as the race went on. The bottom was still better but you could make the top work if you timed it just right. I honestly felt we had the speed and were as fast as anyone on the track. We just had to start so far back that by the time I got up with the leaders, we were out of laps. I wished we had a better heat and could of started closer to the front, but we learned a lot and salvaged a good finish. We will take the effort and build on the notebook for the next time we come back. Our goal this weekend is to go to TMS and grab a lock in on Friday and then come back Saturday and grab a win or strong top-5 finish."
Up next this weekend for Covington is Tony Stewart’s Texas Sprint Car at the Texas Motor Speedway with the Lucas Oil ASCS National Tour.
