Lonnie Wheatley, ROCK SPRINGS, Wyo. (June 13, 2009) – Joshua Hodges was just a handful of laps away from his first American Sprint Car Series Rocky Mountain Region win one night earlier at Sweetwater Speedway before a tangle in lapped traffic derailed his run.
But, the 14-year-old from Tijeras, NM, bounced back in strong fashion on Saturday night to become the youngest feature winner in ASCS history by wiring the field in the 25-lap ASCS Rocky Mountain Region main event at Sweetwater Speedway.
After the initial three attempts to start the feature were waved off, Hodges gunned into the lead aboard the Speed Mart No. 74x Maxim and led all the way to post the win in front of veteran shoe Joe McCarthy, 2003 Rocky Mountain champ Randi Miller, Jake Ossenfort and 2006 champion Patrick Bourke.
Dustin Hall, Randy Pierce, Brett Ream, Willy Hernandez and Jeremy McCune completed the top ten.
Friday night’s preliminary feature winner Brent Kronfuss held down the runner-up slot until being collected at the midway point and destroying his mount in an unusual incident with a lapped car.
Bob Schaeffer, Hall and Hodges topped heat race action, with Mike Posey winning the “B” Main.
