Brian Brown - Aiming for a Championship!

(Bill W) April 30, 2010 – Brian Brown will start his assault on another Knoxville Championship Cup Series crown this weekend at the Knoxville Raceway in Iowa. The Grain Valley, Missouri driver was the 2007 track champion, and after finishing a close second in last year’s race, he hopes to climb another rung on the ladder. He’ll start the weekend tonight at the Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg in ASCS-Midwest/WOW action.

Brian knows that to win a championship at Knoxville, you need to string some consistent nights together. “The thing with Knoxville is…you need to put sixteen or seventeen strong nights together,” he says. “You can’t fall out, and you need to be consistent. This year, with all the unknowns, it’s about as wide open as it’s ever been.”

He hopes that early runs with the World of Outlaws on Goodyear tires can help him on the famous ½ mile. “There will be a lot of good teams coming back to run for the championship,” says Brian. “We’ll be doing the best we can. We ran some Outlaw shows early to get accustomed to the Goodyear tire and I think that’s going to help us. We’ll prepare like we have the last four or five years.”

The Brian Brown Racing FVP #21 hopes to have the winning formula in 2010, and has high hopes. “Our goal is not to have any DNF’s, and to prepare for the big shows in August,” says Brian. “I’d be lying if I said we wouldn’t be disappointed if we didn’t win the championship this year.”

One new twist on the 410 Knoxville Championship Cup Series is points will return to the time trials segment of the evening. Last year, drivers were not rewarded for posting quick times. “We didn’t sandbag, but there were some who probably did,” says Brian. “When I was tenth quick, it wasn’t because we were sandbagging. Lee Nelson from Ostrich Racing Engines builds us some great motors and we’ve made great strides in qualifying. Having the points back will help everyone compete at 100%.”

Who does Brian think will be the top competition? “You always have the veterans like Skip (Jackson) and Lynton (Jeffrey) coming back,” he says. “It doesn’t really matter what (Dusty) Zomer drives; he’s always tough. Sammy (Swindell) will probably be there some in the Big Game car too, and Bronson Maeschen is getting better every week. Young guys like Austin McCarl, Robby Wolfgang, Ian Madsen and Luke Dollansky will be fun to watch to. We have to worry about our deal, and taking care of business on our end. That’s how you win races.”

The team will be a familiar one at Knoxville. “Obviously, Chad Morgan (crew chief) and Kelby Hopkins are with me full-time,” says Brian of the crew. “At Knoxville, my grandpa (George Lasoski) is there every single week. Derek (Beckman) and Glenn Wignall will be there too. We have some good help. We’re going to need it on the nights we run two classes.”

Though tonight’s event in Warrensburg is close to home, it will mark only the second time that Brian has run at the Central Missouri Speedway ¼ mile. “Earl Walls does the promotions there, and he’s not known as a sprint car guy…so it’s kind of neat that we can run there,” he says. “I think this will be a win-win for everyone, and the forecast is looking better and better. I think it will be a good car count, and it’s always fun to race so close to home. Actually it’s even closer to home than Sedalia.”

Brian's Q&A
Al Nolen asks: Do you prepare differently for bigger tracks as opposed to bullrings and how do you prepare differently?
Brian answers: It’s a good question with the coming weekend at Warrensburg, which is a small track, and Knoxville. The biggest thing in preparing for bullrings is mentally as a driver. On a big half-mile, you want to keep it straight and smooth. On a bullring, you need to manhandle them around. You want to make them do what you want them to do, and not what the car wants to do. It takes some adjustments, but most of them are mental.

Brown's Bits
Brian’s only other trip to the Central Missouri Speedway in Warrensburg came in 2005 in WOW competition. After finishing fifth in his heat, he headed to the B. He was able to win that, and start seventeenth in the main event. From there, he charged up to second after winning a battle with cousin, Jon Corbin. Randy Martin won the event. Toby Brown was fourth with Sean Walden fifth.

Brian’s motors have injection from Engler Machine & Tool. Engler Machine was started in 1980 by Tim Engler, his main line of business at that time was plastic injection molds. Over the years he has diversified very widely leaning more towards "high performance products". He now builds fuel injection systems, custom made pulling chassis, gears, shafts, specialty CNC products, racing engines and some custom machining. Tim has been involved in tractor pulling and holds 13 national titles in that sport; he no longer pulls himself but, has been influential to the success of many other pullers through his advice and building capabilities. He races winged sprint cars when time allows this is something he truly likes and wishes he had more time to do. Visit them online at www.EnglerMachine.com!
