Brady Bacon – Win with MOWA Caps Gold Crown Weekend!
(Bill W) October 11, 2016 – Brady Bacon was a busy man again last weekend at the Gold Crown Nationals at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Illinois. He competed with both the USAC National Midget series in the Frank Manafort Racing #76M and with the MOWA sprint series in his own #99. The Broken Arrow, Oklahoma had his hands up front in nearly every feature, but circumstances, especially in the midget class kept him from winning there. This Saturday will find him in the Hoffman Racing/Dynamics, Inc. #69 USAC sprint car at the “Jim Hurtubise Classic” in Terre Haute, Indiana.
On Thursday, Brady raced to second place finishes in both his heat and Qualifier with the midgets. “We were pretty good there right out of the box,” he says. “We were able to get enough points for second, and that’s where we started in the feature. We started second in the feature, and took the lead fairly early. We cut a tire with about five or six laps to go. We changed it and went to the tail and came back to sixth in five laps. I felt like we gave one up there. That was frustrating.”
More misfortune waited in Friday’s midget main event. “We were running second behind (Tanner) Thorson,” says Brady. “We had pulled away from the rest of the field. It seemed our car was getting better after five or six laps and we were waiting for an opportunity. We had a wire break on our switch and we ended up with a DNF. I felt we gave one way there, because we were getting better as the track was going away.”
Brady would end up upside down in Saturday’s midget finale, but the team would battle from the back to finish fourth. “We got wrecked eight laps in,” he says. “We flipped really hard and tore the fence down. Luckily, tearing the fence down gave us enough time to put the car back together. We restarted at the tail and came up to fourth. We felt we had the fastest car every night with the midget, circumstances just didn’t let us get a win.”
With just two events remaining the team sits fourth in points. “Friday pretty much put an end to our championship hopes,” says Brady. “You can’t have a DNF with the number of drivers that are up there in the standings so close in points.”
Another midget/sprint car pilot helped wrench on Brady’s sprint car with the MOWA series. “Steve Buckwalter had some motor problems so he couldn’t race,” he says. “He was able to help and it was good to have another set of hands while I was racing the midget. I feel we had the fastest sprint car there both nights, though I didn’t qualify as well as I should have (6th quick Friday, and third quick Saturday).”
In Friday’s prelim, Brady tracked leader Parker Price-Miller and checkered second. “I think we won both heats by quite a ways,” he says. “Friday, we started the feature ethird. Parker just got out front. We actually passed him once and the yellow came out. We had to go back behind him. With the clean air, the track was slick to the top, and he had to make a mistake for us to have a chance. He didn’t and we ended up second.”
Everything clicked for Saturday’s MOWA finale. “We were able to start up front and led the whole race,” says Brady. “We actually had a better car that night. We made a few adjustments and got it going better. It was good to finally get a win on the weekend, but I really wish we could have grabbed a few. They were there for the taking for us.”
