Inside Line Promotions – CHICO, Calif. (Oct. 4, 2016) – Chase Johnson nearly put together a pair of top-10 finishes last weekend during the Fall Nationals.
Johnson kicked off the doubleheader at Silver Dollar Speedway on Friday by qualifying 23rd quickest before he maneuvered from sixth to fourth place in a heat race to lock into the 16th starting position for the main event.
“We had the wrong gear in for qualifying, which is why we qualified that far back,” he said. “We advanced forward in our heat race and locked ourselves in the A Main.
“We had a strong performance in the feature. I think we could have picked up a couple more spots, but just ran out of time.”
Johnson gained eight positions during the main event to record an eighth-place result, which was his 17th top 10 of the season.
He returned to the quarter-mile oval on Saturday when he timed in ninth quickest in his group. Johnson then ended fifth in a heat race to advance directly into the main event, which he started on the outside of the ninth row.
“We worked our way up to ninth until about 10 laps to go,” he said. “I got together with another car and lost the front end of the car. Once we set it back down we were halfway off the track. We fell back almost to last. We were able to make some positions up to finish 14th. It was a tough ending to the weekend because of how fast we were. I think we had a chance at a top-five result. The speed was there. The cards just didn’t play out in our favor.”
Johnson rallied back from the late-race incident to finish 14th.
He is scheduled to drive for Shawn and Cyndi Thomas this Friday at Ocean Speedway in Watsonville, Calif., with the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series and he will be back in his family owned sprint car on Saturday at Petaluma Speedway in Petaluma, Calif.
