Inside Line Promotions – PLACERVILLE, Calif. (Sept. 26, 2016) – Chase Johnson had to climb a hill last Saturday at Placerville Speedway.

“I thought it started off looking fairly well,” he said. “We pulled an early number for qualifying and that was not the good thing to do. It was way different than a normal Placerville race. The track was still wet and hadn’t come in yet. We didn’t have a good qualifying time and we struggled the entire night because of that reason.”

Johnson, who was driving for Shawn and Cyndi Thomas, qualified 19th quickest during the King of the West 410 Sprint Car Series event. He then advanced from seventh to fifth place in a heat race, but the only way he’d improve his starting position for the main event would have been to win the heat and lock into the dash.

“Passing was at a minimum,” he said. “We were behind the eight ball and weren’t able to climb back out. I passed a couple of guys. I think we turned one of the fastest lap times, if not the fastest, in the heat races. The track was still very wet and there wasn’t any passing going on. It was tough to make many moves.”

That lined Johnson up on the outside of the ninth row for the main event.

“That was tough because of the track position,” he said. “We did make good progress. The car had great speed. It was definitely set up good for the beginning. I think we made it up to 10th at one time and then we got shuffled back on a late-race restart. The track went away a little and so did the car.”

Johnson maneuvered from 18th to record a 12th-place result in the main event.

He is slated to return to action this Friday and Saturday at Silver Dollar Speedway in Chico, Calif., where he will pilot his family owned sprint car during the Fall Nationals.
